The combined efforts of the Nappanee Rotary Club, Safe Kids Elkhart County and the police departments from Nappanee and Wakarusa held a bike rodeo last Saturday (Aug. 11) at Coppes Commons. The participants traversed a course on the parking lot, while being judged on various biking skills categories: signaling for stops and turns; balance and bicycle control, braking and overall bike handling confidence. The rodeo had two classes: preschool/first grade and second grade through fifth. Trophies were given to the two winners and all participants received ribbons. Many other prizes were awarded with a free bike drawing (donated by Burlington Bike Shop) at the end of the event.
In front are (from left) overall winners Joe Newcomer (Newcomer also won the bike) and Roman Yoder with event co-chairpersons John Leavitt (Rotarian president) and Nappanee Chief of Police, Julie Dijkstra.
