Big 2nd quarter pushes Bremen beyond Argos, 60-37

January 18, 2012

ARGOS — Argos and Bremen’s boys last met on Dec. 13, with the Lions taking a double-overtime win.
When the two teams met the second time at their Bi-County opener Tuesday, however, Ethan Pike took the suspense out early in a 60-37 Bremen win at at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Bremen will play the winner of a weather-postponed game between New Prairie and Oregon-Davis tonight in the early tournament semifinal Friday at LaVille at 6:30 p.m.
The opening frame saw neither team connecting on offense and only three total baskets scored. But Pike fueled a charge in the second quarter, scoring eight early points on a pair of aggressive drives to the hoop followed by a triple, and suddenly the Lions were up 10. Jacob Box added six points as Bremen had a 24-3 quarter and allowed no baskets.
“Pike really set the tone on defense,” First-year Bremen coach Ryan Eakins said. “That’s been our emphasis the last few weeks. We’re trying to create a mental approach that takes pride in individual and team defense. We knew Argos could shoot, and we tried to extend a bit and give less space for their shooters.”
The Dragons kept pace with the Lions in the second half but couldn’t cut into the 20-point margin forged at the half. Pike led all scorers with 20, while Box and Austin Huff added 13 apiece.
“It doesn’t show much in the box score, but Ben Hueni did a great job running the offense,” Eakins said. “He had some great passes, and also did a much better job of keeping (Taylor) Ogle out of the lane. That was a problem the first time we played.”
The young Dragons, again starting five sophomores, got 14 points from Dominic Cataldo and eight from Casey Johnson.
Argos fell to 2-9 on the year, while Bremen improved to 5-5.
The Dragons will play in the consolation against the loser of tonight’s New Prairie-OD contest at the LaVille auxiliary gym at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The JV Lions also beat Argos in their match-up Monday, 42-16. Bremen’s JV will play New Prairie, which beat Oregon-Davis 52-22 Monday, in the JV semifinals tonight at the LaVille auxiliary gym at 8 p.m.
