Bethany beats Dragons 8-0 at LaVille boys semistate
LAKEVILLE — The first time the two teams played, Femi Hollinger-Janzen wasn’t as much of an issue. At Saturday’s LaVille Boys Soccer Semistate, he took control.
The Indiana University recruit and Bethany Christian senior forward notched four goals within the first 22 minutes to give his team a 5-0 lead, then watched from the sidelines as Class A No. 3 Bethany coasted to an 8-0 semifinal win over Argos at Newton Park.
The Bruins ultimately lost the semistate championship to Fort Wayne Canterbury.
In the semifinal, Feminger-Janzen put Bethany on the board on a Lucas Morgan assist in the sixth minute, then assisted on Andrew Snyder’s score less than a minute later to give the Bruins a quick 2-0 start. He scored two more goals in the 17th and 18th minutes to complete the hat trick, then tallied another in the 22nd minute before subbing out with a 5-0 cushion.
“He’s probably the strongest player I’ve ever coached against,” said Argos Head Boys Soccer Coach Todd VanDerWeele. “He’s an amazing player. The first time we played him, we were able to neutralize him somewhat. Today he just destroyed us. They run everything through him, and he definitely grabbed that game and controlled it.”
Statistically, the most likely time for a soccer team to score goals is within a minute of another goal having been scored, and that was certainly the case for the Bethany-Argos contest as the Bruins notched two goals in the sixth minute and put in another two during a 58-second long span between the 17th and 18th minutes. After bouncing back from a 1-0 deficit early in their Caston Regional championship game with West Lafayette a week before, the Dragons were unable to respond at semistate.
“The first goal I knew we could bounce back, but the second goal right away, that one just killed us,” said VanDerWeele. “I think we got scared after that. They’re number three in Class A for a reason. They’re phenomenal, and we just didn’t have it today.”
It was a disappointing end to an outstanding season by Argos, which ended 10-year sectional and regional droughts while finishing 13-7. The team now says farewell to eight seniors in Zach Dietl, Cody Hollabaugh, Ronald Tanner, Patric Shei, Kole Stone, Anders Tiegmoen, Justin Cunningham and Kyle Peterson, but with a strong underclass expected to return, VanDerWeele feels good about the future.
“It’s an amazing season,” said the Argos skipper. “I think most any soccer coach, one of their goals is to win the sectional. It was the first time in awhile and it was very exciting. Winning the regional far exceeded the expectations I had for the season. I knew we’d have a solid season, but that took the cake. It was great to be here. I wish we could have shown a little bit more, but I have a young team and hopefully we can work hard next year and get back here.
“It’s terrible to go out like this. (The seniors) have been with me since my first season. As a coach, not having any success in the tournament you’re kind of wondering is it working, but now I at least feel good that they bought what I was selling, and I hope that they feel good about what they did because they should. They’re good kids, they’ve worked hard for four years, and they finally got something good for their efforts.”
