CULVER — Benjamin V. Mevis, 76, of Culver, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.
He was born June 16, 1936 in Plymouth to the late Harry and Nora (Stuck) Mevis. Ben served his country in the Nike Missile Division of the Army and guarded skies over Detroit, Mich. He was later employed at the Burr Oak Hardware for five years and at Transit Mix for 33 1/2 years as a mechanic and fabricator. Later, he enjoyed doing small engine repair at home. Ben is a member of Union Church of the Brethren in Plymouth.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sharon E. (Heiser) Mevis, his sons David (Katrina) Mevis of Elkhart, Tracy (Tina) Mevis of Warsaw, and Kent (Chandra) Mevis of Bloomington, daughter Bonnie Mevis of Culver, and seven grandchildren: Levi, Krista, Makayla, Andrew, Harrison, Mikah, and Lydia. He is also survived by a brother, Ted Mevis of Plymouth, and a sister, Grace Gamble of Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Janet, a grandson, Jonas, brothers Floyd and Dale, and sisters Flossie Kimbrel, Luella Ruark, and Evelyn Ritter.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Odom Funeral Home in Culver. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday at 10 a.m. preceding the service at the Odom Funeral Home in Culver. Burial will follow at the Culver Masonic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Union Church of the Brethren.
