Barbara S. Ritter
Dec. 9, 1947 - June 21, 2013
SOUTH BEND — Barbara Sue Ritter passed away at Memorial Hospital, Friday, June 21, 2013 with her husband and family by her side after being hospitalized for an unexpected medical emergency. She was born Barbara Sue Mikesell in Argos on Dec. 9, 1947 to Oscar and Violet Mikesell. She lived in South Bend, until the family moved to Culver in 1960. Barbara graduated from Culver High School but lived and worked in the Mishawaka-South Bend area her entire adult life. She worked for Valley American Bank for many years and then later earned an associate degree in interior design where she applied her design skills at Piser-Thanos as an interior designer. Barbara also gave back to the community by volunteering her time as a mentor to young girls in the South Bend Community School system and as a volunteer at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She attended Trinity Evangelical Free Church in South Bend.
Barbara married Louis Jenkins in 1970, who later passed in 1980. She married Ron Ritter in 1990, who survives her. Barbara is also survived by her son, Todd Jenkins of South Bend, grandchildren, Kyle, Carl, Kathryn, Alex and Isabella; mother, Violet Mae Mikesell of Plymouth; sisters, Joyce Kowatch (Jack-deceased) of Monterey; Vicky Huys of Plymouth, and Dee Florea (Rich) of Granger. Barbara also has many loving nieces and nephews who also adored her. She was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Mikesell in 1972, and father, Oscar Mikesell in 2005, both of Culver.
Family was the center of Barbara’s life. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, serving daughter, adoring grandmother and irreplaceable sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, who was so very loved by all. Barbara also loved nature, flying with her husband Ron in their plane, and was a wonderful advocate for animals. Barbara will be sorely missed by her Maggie!
Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday, June 24, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, and one hour prior to services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, 61770 Miami Road, South Bend. Cremation will occur, and her final resting place will be at the Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver. Online condolences to the family may be sent to www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
