Argos finishes 2nd at home invite
ARGOS — Munster outlasted Argos 3-1 in the championship game of the Argos Invitational Saturday.
Melissa Strohl gave the Lady Mustangs a lead midway through the first period, but Sammie Hopkins answered with a blast from 35 yards out just minutes later. Argos, with an enrollment of 215 students, had the first half edge over Munster, which boasts an enrollment of 1616: Strohl’s goal was the Mustangs’ only shot on goal of the opening frame, with the Dragons getting four.
The second half saw the reverse, however, as Munster put seven shots on goal to one by Argos.
“It was a great first half,” Argos Coach Jon Alcorn said. “We played much better than the first game, in terms of possession. In the second half, they just wore us down. We had a 15- to 20-minute stretch where they just had us bottled up on our end. But we shook it off and managed to open it up. I was really proud of the way the kids turned the second half around a bit and created chances late. We just didn’t get the break we needed.”
Allyson Roller won a scrum off a corner kick that turned out to be the game-winner in the 64th minute. The break the Dragons needed just missed due to a spectacular tip save by Mustang keeper Parin Patel in the closing minutes on an Argos shot that would’ve leveled the match. The Mustangs got an own-goal off a corner in the last minute to deflate the Dragons’ last chance.
“We had a great chance on a corner, and then you have to credit Patel for that tremendous save on that shot,” said Alcorn.
In the consolation match, Northwood took a 2-0 lead over LaVille on a pair of goals by Val Ostrowski and held on for the win. Jesse Feitz gave the Lancers life with a score in the 58th minute, but they couldn’t get the equalizer.
In the first round, Argos defeated LaVille 4-1.
The Dragons had a strong first half offensively, taking a 3-0 lead. Jami Patterson followed a cross from Karalei Kring and scored when the Lancer keeper mishandled the ball. Raelynn Lafrance’s cross from the right side was knocked in by Allison Flower, and Carly McCay fed Patterson for a second goal with ten minutes to play in the first half.
LaVille’s Jesse Feitz gave the Lancers a spark with about ten minutes to play as she dribbled from 35 yards out and hit a rocket from the left side to put the visitors on the board at 3-1. With five minutes to play, Flower fed Patterson through, and the Argos junior finished to notch a hat trick and put the game away.
“We talked about how flat we came out last Saturday (Kankakee Valley) and the kids were ready,” said Alcorn. “We had a good week of practice, a solid win Thursday at Trinity, and we capitalized early on a few of our opponent’s mistakes. It’s pretty tough to go down 3-0, but credit (LaVille head coach) Steve (Hodge) for getting his kids to compete second half. They were pressing us, and when Jesse scored that nice goal, it shifted the momentum and play their way a bit. We really needed that clincher by Jami to close it out. I know LaVille had a big win Thursday (at CGA) and so maybe they were like us last week at KV.”
Munster opened with a 3-0 win over NorthWood, outshooting the Panthers 9-5.
