Argos edges Trinity, 1-0

ARGOS — The Argos girls soccer team opened Northern Indiana Soccer Conference (NISC) play with a 1-0 win over visiting Trinity Thursday.
The evenly matched game featured Argos with a 10-9 edge in shots on goal and Trinity with an 8-4 lead in corner kicks. The game-winner came from 2011 All-State forward Jami Patterson on an assist from Katie Williams midway through the second half.
“It was a warm night, and everyone was tired,” Argos coach Jon Alcorn said. “We starting passing better in the second half, and they wore down just a bit. Katie made a nice cross and Jami chipped it in.I have great respect for the job Trinity does and Coach (Carsten) Schmidt. They stayed very organized at midfield, and it was a battle all the way.”
The game was the Dragons’ first shutout on the year as Karlee VanDerWeele registered an impressive nine saves in goal.
“The clean sheet was important. We probably had better scoring opportunities overall, but Karlee saved two great shots in the first half and just had a strong outing,” said Alcorn. “While our defense is still a work in progress, our goal-keeping has been excellent. VanDerWeele’s been doing what a senior captain should, and she’s bought us time for the kids in front of her to learn. Shelby Sanders had a good night as a central defender and we saw improvement in Emily Alcorn, Madi Williams, Abby Stauffer, Charlie Horn, Lillie Kozuch and Haley Kepler. If we can play as a solid defensive unit, we could improve rapidly.”
The Dragons improved to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Titans dropped to 3-2. The Dragon Invitational starts Saturday at 1 p.m. with LaVille taking on Argos, followed by Munster-Northwood at 3 p.m. The consolation game is at 6 p.m. with the championship at 8 p.m.
In the JV match, Trinity won 3-2 on a pair of goals from Rachel Cramer and one from Molly Hoover. Valerie Rospopo scored on an assist from Cylie Hartman, and Rospopo assisted Mariah Lineberry on another goal for the Dragons.
