Area athletes named to IBCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention rolls

March 18, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Three area boys and five girls players made the honorable mention list as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its Academic All-State nominations for the 2012-13 season.
On the boys’ side, Bremen’s Jacob Box, John Glenn’s Nathan Stegemiller, and Plymouth’s Gabe Vervynckt all earned the Academic All-State HM distinction, while for the girls, Triton’s Breanna Lemler, Glenn’s Carah Ochs, Knox’s Chelsea Collins, North Judson’s Jordann Frasure, and NorthWood’s Maddie Schwartz were named to the HM list.
All total, 57 seniors were chosen as first-team Academic All-State, and 132 more boys and 111 more girls were recognized to the IBCA’s honorable mention roll.
The IBCA Academic All-State team is a program where both academic and athletic prowess are factored in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered alongside athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and shooting percentage.
“The quality of these student-athletes shows that success in academics and success in athletics are not separate entities,” IBCA executive director Steve Witty said. “Rather, in many cases, a player’s success in the classroom directly contributes to his or her success on the floor.”
IBCA-member head coaches may nominate seniors who meet criteria that include a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one’s class, an SAT score of 1,500 or an ACT score of 23.
Once nominations are received, an IBCA committee reviews the information and determines awards for first team and honorable mention.
Those selected will receive certificates from the IBCA for their honor, to be distributed by coaches following the IBCA Spring Clinic on April 26-27 in Indianapolis.
