Ancilla soccer collects accolades

November 8, 2012

DONALDSON — Three Ancilla soccer players received postseason awards in the MCCAA and Region 12, the college announced Wednesday.
Manny Awuku (Hornchurch, UK) and Ignacio Avilles (La Habra, Ca.) were selected to the MCCAA All-Conference 1st team, and team co-captain Matt Willinger (Evansville) received MCCAA Honorable Mention after starting in all 15 games this season and performing as a consistent anchor on the backline.
“I am really happy for these three players being recognized,” said Chargers coach Darren Gallagher. “Each had a large impact on our season, and I believe the voting was indicative of the style of soccer we played as well as the quality of players we develop.”
Manny Awuku also garnered 1st team All-Region honors, leading the Chargers with 19 total points. He concluded his career at Ancilla totaling 49 points with 20 goals and nine assists.
Central midfielder Ignacio Avilles was voted second team All-Region. He was one of three freshmen selected all-conference and one of seven freshmen to make the all-region team.
“We will miss players like Manny and Matt, but I also know the future is bright as they leave our program with many opportunities ahead,” stated Gallagher.
