Ancilla fall athletes excel in classroom
PLYMOUTH — Ancilla College student athletes continue to do well in the classroom as well as on the court and on the field of competition.
The Ancilla College Athletic Department reports that 40 of the college’s student athletes finished the 2012 fall semester with a 3.0 grade point average or better, including 17 of these students with a 3.5 GPA. Overall, the average fall athlete GPA came in at 2.662.
Women’s volleyball athletes overall came out on top with a team GPA of 3.159, and the softball team came in a close second with a team GPA of 3.075. Two student athletes finished the fall semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
“Ancilla College and our Athletic Department puts tremendous emphasis on achieving academically,” Ancilla Athletic Director Gene Reese stated. “Student/athletes must be very organized. They not only spend time in practice, working out in the weight room, and competing in games; but they must also go to class and study long hours to maintain a 3.0 (B) grade point average. I am proud to host our annual “Honor Roll Dinner” to recognize their achievements.”
Women’s volleyball coach/academic/athletic advisor Lana Singleton said, “The numbers speak for themselves; 40 student athletes with a 3.0 or better, 17 of those at a 3.5 or better, and two student athletes with a 4.0. I am very proud of our student athletes who not only worked hard with their sports teams this fall but got it done on the academic side as well. The student athletes worked hard, the coaches held them accountable, and the faculty did a great job of communicating when problems arose.”
Ancilla College enrolls 500 students in 17 degree programs ranging from accounting to nursing. It was founded by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in 1937, and is located 2 miles south of US 30 on Union Road near Plymouth.
