Ancilla’s Smith is NJCAA Division 1 Player of the Week

DONALDSON — Ancilla College freshman striker JaCoby Smith has been named the NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of September 5 through September 11.
Smith posted six goals and two assists in two matches at the Lakeland Community College Invitational this past weekend, leading Ancilla to a 6-0 victory over host Lakeland and an 8-0 victory over Cuyahoga Community College.
In Saturday’s opener, Smith scored a mere 2:20 into the match, finishing off a rebound after a failed clearance. He assisted Manny Awuku 90 seconds later on a cross and completed his hat trick with two long range efforts at 13:06 and 57:24.
On Sunday Smith was at it again, heading home a cross from Yordan Rivera 4:21 into the match. He assisted Mikey Solares at the 29:04 mark and scored twice more on a rebound at 58:50 and a diving header at 64:45.
“From a striker’s perspective, JaCoby had a fantastic weekend,” said Ancilla College Men’s Soccer Coach James Drzewiecki. “What I like about it is the variety of ways he found the back of the net — headers, rebounds, long-range blasts — it’s a testament to his ability as a finisher. We had excellent defensive and midfield play behind him, and it was truly collective effort to get those goals. Still, we were all very impressed with the job JaCoby did up front, and he is very deserving of the honor.”
Smith is currently sitting on 20 points for the season with eight goals and four assists in just six matches.
He has recorded at least one point in all six matches thus far and has helped Ancilla jump out to a 5-1-0 record this season. The Chargers currently lead the NJCAA Region 12 standings with 15 points.
