JUNEAU, ALASKA — A celebration of the life of Alma (Kennedy) Fassel will be hosted by her family Sunday Oct. 3, 2010 at the Juneau Yacht Club in Juneau Alaska from 4 to 6 p.m. in the afternoon. Friends and family are invited to attend the celebration, share a memory, and toast Alma.
Alma Ruth Kennedy was born in the Hoosier state of Indiana March 19, 1936 and was blessed with parents Ruth and Lew Kennedy, and brothers Hubert and Byron Kennedy. In her youth she was a lifeguard and loved playing basketball. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1954, and was fortunate to attend her 50-year high school reunion in 2004.
Alma attended the Memorial School of Nursing and classes at Indiana University in Bloomington prior to moving to the great land of Alaska in 1966. Always up for an adventure, Alma lived in Douglas, Juneau, Nome and Sitka, Alaska; Atlin, British Columbia; Whitehorse, Yukon Territories and Lewiston, Maine. She worked for the state of Alaska government for many years, for Dr. Kemp in Juneau, The Rie Munoz Gallery in Juneau, and Allen Marine, Inc. in Sitka.
Since her retirement in 1999, Alma lived at Fireweed Place in Juneau where she developed many wonderful friendships. Alma was a member of the Southeast Alaska Club, Pioneers of Alaska, Juneau Golf Club, LowTide Ladies, and the Red Hat Society. She loved going for walks, golfing, visiting with friends, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Alma suffered a severe and unexpected stroke Wednesday, Aug. 4 in Juneau and passed away at 74 years of age Saturday, Aug. 7 at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. At her request, she has been cremated.
She is survived by her son, Carl Fassel; grandson, Rick Fassel; daughter, Katrina Mitchell; son-in-law, Grey Mitchell; and granddaughter Hannah Mitchell, all of Juneau. She leaves behind her two brothers, Byron Kennedy and Hubert Kennedy, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
If you are unable to attend the celebration, but have a memory you would like to share, please send to Katrina Mitchell at 3065 Douglas Highway Juneau, AK 99801.
