Alex Starr named CCAC Player of the Week
HAMMOND — Purdue University Calumet junior and PHS graduate Alex Starr was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, after joining PUC’s 1,000-point club during PUC’s 77-73 win over Trinity International on Saturday.
The weekly honor is the first of Starr’s career and the fourth for the Peregrines this season, who earned the honor a league-best six times a year ago.
The 5-foot-8 shooting guard knocked down five treys en route to a game-high 23 points Saturday, but it was her 3-pointer from several feet beyond the arc that proved to be her biggest shot as she put the Peregrines on top for good in the closing minutes.
Starr leads the CCAC in scoring this season with her 15.7 points per game, while ranking third in the league with 54 3-point field goals on the year. She has reached double-figures in 23 contests in 2011-12 and currently ranks fourth in school history with 150 3-pointers in her career.
Purdue Calumet will travel to Palos Heights, Ill. this Wednesday, February 15, to face Trinity Christian for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Black and Gold will look to for their 20th win of the year, as they aim to become the fifth team in school history to accomplish the feat.
