Aguilar helps Rockies draw with Eagles in 1st start

September 14, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth back-up goalie Erik Aguilar gave his team a boost, and the Rockies played sectional rival Culver Military Academy to a 0-0 draw at home Tuesday.
“(It was) a pretty fast-paced and very physical game,” said Plymouth head boys soccer coach Josh Martin. “CMA played some very clever counter attacking soccer, but when we man-marked Luther Jacobs we were able to disrupt a lot of their offensive build-up in the second half.“
Aguilar made six saves in goal in his first start at keeper replacing usual gk Charlie Brown for Plymouth. Jordan Popi returned from a long-standing wrist injury to shore up the Plymouth defense, while Brandon Baird moved into the midfield to help the Rockies’ possession game as the two teams played to a near statistical dead heat, with CMA taking six shots on goal to Plymouth’s five.
Ryan Sete finished with five saves in the tie.
“Getting Jordan Popi back was helpful in bolstering our defense and Erik Aguilar with his first start of the season made some fantastic saves and helped our team earn a much needed shutout,” said Martin. “Doug Andrews and Cesar Aguilar were busy up top and each had some chances at goal but were denied by Ryan Sete of CMA, who had a steady game in goal. Kyle VanLue, Kyle Barry, and Blake Milliser are starting to get more consistent in the back and that is good news for us. And moving Brandon Baird into the midfield helped us play much quicker and efficiently in the midfield.”
CMA and Plymouth will both make the move from Argos up to the Class 2A Warsaw Sectional in the first season of a classed IHSAA state soccer tournament.
Plymouth returns to its Northern Lakes Conference schedule Thursday with a home game against Elkhart Memorial. The action is scheduled to begin a 5 p.m.
