'39 Steps’ brings comedy, intrigue to Culver stage

April 1, 2011

Culver Academies’ Huffington Concert Series for the 2010-2011 season concludes with Alfred Hitchcock’s award-winning play, “The 39 Steps,” Wednesday, April 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. onstage at Eppley Auditorium on the Academies campus.
The play is Broadway’s longest-running comedy thriller. Performed by a cast of four, says the Academies’ website at www.culver.org, the play “follows a man with a boring life as he meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon after, a mysterious organization called ‘The 39 Steps’ is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt. Winner of two Tony and Drama Desk Awards and London’s Oliver Award for Best New Comedy, the performance is packed with laughs and over 150 unique characters!”
With one actor playing the hero, an actress plays three women with whom he’s romantically involved, and two other actors play all other characters in the show. Accordng to Internet sources, the play is full of comedy and references, puns, and other fun involving other legendary Hitchcock films.
Tickets are available at two locations: Culver Academies Steinbrenner Performing Arts Center Box Office, open Monday through Friday from 1-4 p.m.; and the Eppley Auditorium Lobby Box Office, open one hour prior to the performance. All seats are reserved. Cash, personal checks, MasterCard, Visa, and America Express are accepted. For additional information, contact the Box Office at 574-842-7058.
