November 15, 2010

PLYMOUTH — A two-vehicle crash Friday night claimed the life of a Plymouth woman, and injured four others.
Doris R. Emmons, 85, died Saturday morning at 1:30 a.m. from injuries she received in a crash at Plymouth Goshen Trail and U.S. 30.
County Police Officer Rick Kanarr investigated the crash Friday night that occurred at 6:11 p.m. His report indicates that Emmons was northbound on Plymouth-Goshen Trail in a 1998 Toyota Aviaon and crossing U.S. 30. Another vehicle in front of Emmons stopped in the median and Emmons stopped in the middle of the highway behind the other vehicle.
Emmons’ Toyota was directly in the path of a 2000 Chrysler Town and County van driven by 74-year-old Edward A. Waltz of Rochester who was eastbound on U.S. 30. Waltz was unable to avoid the automobile and struck the Emmons vehicle directly on the driver’s side.
After the impact, Waltz’s van careened off into the guardrail where it came to rest.
Emmons was airlifted by Med Flight from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She died later in the morning from blunt force trauma to the head.
Waltz complained of pain to the ribs while passengers in his vehicle, Leona Waltz complained of pain to the left shoulder and chest, Melvin Schryer had a laceration to the left forearm and Grace Schryer complained of pain to the right leg and chest. They were all transported to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth by Plymouth Paramedics.
Officer Rick Kanarr was assisted at the scene by Plymouth Police, Fire and EMS, Indiana State Police and Med Flight.
