1 dead after high speed chase, firing on police

WALKERTON -- One Marshall County man is dead after leading police on a high speed chase throughout the county Thursday night.
The pursuit began in Argos with an attempted traffic stop on a suspected drunk driver. At about 8 p.m. the suspect began traveling on Michigan Road and then north on US 31. At one point his vehicle was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of US 30. The red pick-up truck took the North Michigan Road exit and traveled north on Michigan Road to Higbee Corner heading westbound. At times his speed was in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The driver headed east on US 6 but pulled off on the south side of the road near Quince Road and took off running through a small subdivision.
Officers ordered the suspect to stop, he pulled a weapon and fired two shots and officer returned fire hitting the suspect several times. Police called for paramedics and a helicopter but the suspect was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by Walkerton EMS with Plymouth Paramedics, where he died from injuries.
