‘A champion’: Bremen mourns Gov. Otis ‘Doc’ Bowen

May 15, 2013

Three women hold the American flag near the intersection of Center and Plymouth streets as they await former Gov. Otis ‘Doc’ Bowen’s funeral procession to pass on Friday, May 10.

BREMEN — For a day the eyes of Indiana were on Bremen as it laid to rest one of its own.
The funeral for former Ind. Gov. Dr. Otis R. “Doc” Bowen drew the politically elite from both parties while hundreds – if not thousands – lined Center Street from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to Bremen Municipal Cemetery for the procession route.
“William Shakespeare in one of his plays, I believe it was ‘Twelfth Night’ had this very well-known quotation: ‘Some are born to greatness, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.’ Doctor Bowen I think was all three,” Rev. David Kahlenberg, an Indianapolis pastor, eulogized during Bowen’s funeral on Friday, May 10.
