Wakarusa Council discusses Maple Syrup Festival

This spring will mark a milestone occasion for the legendary Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival. To commemorate this achievement, the festival planning committee thought it would be ideal to add a third day to this year's event, a notion which was given a vote of approval by the Wakarusa Town Council during its Tuesday, January 14 session.

Wa-Nee get days off due to Blizzard

NAPPANEE -- The recent spate of snowfall that inundated the Wa-Nee district has had an impact on the scheduling of missed classes earlier this month. Those changes were detailed by Superintendent Joe Sabo during the Monday, January 13 session of the Board of School Trustees.

Maple Syrup festival in search of sponsors

WAKARUSA — Wakarusa’s main event of the year is expanding this year, Normally, the Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce needs between 55 and 60 sponsors to support the Maple Syrup Festival’s multitude of free events, but this year, they’ll need even more if they’re to follow through with plans.
“The sponsors make it so everything’s free,” Deb Shively, executive secretary for the Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce, said.

Coppes Commons hosting talent show

Coppes Commons is looking for contestants to compete in their first ever talent show during the Feb. 8 Second Saturdays.
Entry to the competition is free, but required by Feb. 1.
There will be two age groups, anyone under 14, and those above age 15. The three categories are music, dance or miscellaneous. The music category may include playing an instrument or singing and miscellaneous can be anything from telling a story to to juggling to riding a unicycle to sword swallowing (not recommended).

City Council begins new session during January meeting

NAPPANEE—Common Council members met January 8 to begin the 2014 session overseeing the City of Nappanee. During that time the Council passed four resolutions and approved one ordinance amendment while putting on hold matters pertaining to the Nappanee Business Improvement District (BID).

Mayor Thompson outlines city’s sound fiscal planning, announces he is not seeking re-election

NAPPANEE—Mayor Larry Thompson gave his annual State-of-the-City Address, January 8, during the first 2014 Nappanee Common Council Meeting. In his speech Thompson outlined the many strong fiscal planning attributes within the city government before announcing he will not seek re-election for a sixth term. Thompson’s current term ends December 31, 2015.

Bluegrass music at Coppes this weekend

The Wakarusa Bluegrass Festival is getting into the holiday spirit. This year, instead of a fall festival to help raise funds, the festival has decided to host a battle of the bands.
Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, five local bands will compete in a Battle of the Bands at the Mill Room of Coppes Commons for the title of best band to raise funds for the annual Wakarusa Bluegrass Festival. Visitors can vote for the best band by donating with their dollars.

Quilt Garden gives thanks

The Nappanee Quilt Garden took time on Wednesday to give thanks to the many groups who assisted in the quilt garden and mum sales this season.
"The efforts that they did to raise the funds for this were outstanding," Donna Persing said.
Special thanks were given to the Boys and Girls Club, Open Door, The Crossing Alternative Schools, Family Christian Development Center, Nappanee Noon Kiwanis, Psi Iota Xi sorority, Nappanee Public Library and the Elkhart County Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Local business prepare for the holidays

Second Saturdays is hosting a window decorating contest!
Now through Saturday, residents and visitors can vote for their favorite store decor at participating retailers.
Many business are participating including Newcomer Jewelry, Metzler's Shoes, LJ Wagner Home Interiors and Antiques on the Square, Kountry Cabinets and Home Furnishings, Graber Floor and Carpet Studio, Downtown Design and Consignment, Veni's Sweet Shop and many more.

FCDC presents Christmas Jubilee

NAPPANEE — Family Christian Development Center is gearing up for another Christmas Jubilee.
"It's trying to reach the right people who wouldn't otherwise have Christmas for their children," Karen Sherer-Stolzfus, executive director of the FCDC, said.
Christmas Jubilee gathers support from numerous agencies throughout the Wa-Nee area. Using the Toys for Tots collection bins, the FCDC compiles many toys and gifts for children throughout the community and brings them all to one central location.
