April 5, 2011

NAPPANEE — More than $1,700 in overdue fines were forgiven and 2,200 pounds of food donated in a program that did double duty to help the community at the Nappanee Public Library last month.
The library and Nappanee’s Family Christian Development Center (FCDC) teamed up for the return of “Food for Fines,” which is designed to help stock shelves in the center’s food pantry and give library cardholders the chance to put their accounts in good standing.
A dollar in overdue fines was removed from cardholders’ accounts for each non-perishable food item donated in the month February.

"This an opportunity for businesses to come in and sell and produce" Mast said. "It's a unique atmosphere."

When Mast took over the cavernous, 180,000-square foot structure made up of at least 15 building projects between 1887-1955, many scoffed.

January 7, 2011

NAPPANEE — December is a month based on giving. While that magnanimity is typically focused on winter clothing, canned goods or toys, Bremen’s Sarah Stine gave something a little more personal this holiday season.
Two days after Christmas and a day after her fifth birthday, Sarah had her first full haircut for a donation to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children who suffer from long-term medical hair loss.
