Waterline insurance not related to any city programs

May 2, Nappanee Water Superintendent/Manager Gale Gerber issued a warning to local residents regarding offers for alleged insurance  for waterlines.
Area residents have reported being contacted by an unknown source trying to sell insurance for city waterlines coming into individual homes. Those reporting wanted to make the city of Nappanee aware of the solicitiation in case it was not affiliated with the city itself, or city programs.

3 NorthWood academic teams qualify for state

Competitions were held across the state of Indiana April 19 for every school which chose to field academic teams in the following areas: English, fine arts, science, cat, social studies, and interdisciplinary. The top five teams from each class qualified for the state finals.
NorthWood academic teams competed at the area meet at Northridge High School. After computing scores for the other 63 schools which competed in Class 2, three NWHS teams — fine arts, social studies, and interdisciplinary — qualified for the state finals, to be held May 7, at Purdue University.

NAPPANEE — As an auctioneer and antiques enthusiast, when Dave Hahn was delivering fuel to a customer (of Henschen Oil) on C.R. 46, and saw the aged log home sitting on the property, he knew it was something he had to have. His wife Bets, also an enthusiast, was — at first — not as sure. “It was covered in siding and had drywall inside,” the food director for Wa-Nee Schools said. “He asked the owner (Nancy Miller) if he could have it, and she said that as long as he took it and left the area like it was never there, he could.”

Local quilt mural artist gives time and talents to Chinese government

NAPPANEE — Jeff Stillson is known throughout Elkhart County for his beautiful work in creating quilt murals on display in each city participating in the annual quilt garden walk each summer.
His hometown of Nappanee boasts additional downtown murals from the master artist. Now his work is known, and recognized, in foreign lands after a March trip to China where he painted a mural for the Chinese government.

‘Arf!’ opens tonight at NorthWood High

Some folks in Wakarusa may have been inclined to ask a second- or third-grader if there is anything noteworthy taking place at school as of late.
And those inquiring may have heard the excited and enthusiastic response of “Arf!” This would not be the youngster’s best impersonation of a puppy, but rather, the name of a whimsical musical taking place this week at NorthWood High School.

Lilac room ready for business at The Inn at Amish Acres

NAPPANEE — The Lilac meeting room is the latest refurbishment done at The Inn at Amish Acres. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held the evening of April 12 to introduce it to the public. Members of the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce were in attendance as well as Amish Acres executives and managers, Elkhart Mayor Larry Thompson, and area business owners and managers.

NAPPANEE — Political figures from Indiana Districts 9, 12 and 21 attended “Nappanee’s Third District” meeting, April 16, at the Nappanee Center. Nearly 30 Nappanee, Bremen, and area residents were in attendance to hear Rep. Tim Wesco, District 21, and Sens. Ryan Mishler, District 9, and Carlin Yoder, District 12, speak candidly about their views about ongoing legislation and their vision for the future of Indiana.
The subject of state vouchers to schools as payment for a student’s enrollment was a main focus of discussions between voters and their representatives.

Pet Expo, fundraisers successful start to funding dog park

NAPPANEE — It was “Raining Cats and Dogs” in Nappanee April 9. That was the theme for the April “Embrace Second Saturday” events, and it succeeded in bringing in visitors from in and outside of Nappanee to raise a remarkable $1,800 in funding for a proposed dog park on the city’s east side.
Organizers were very pleased with donations, which total an estimated $3,000 when combined with already gathered support for the project.
Still more fundraisers are in the works to help raise the $40,000 needed to construct the designed canine park.

Wa-Nee Schools mull over rescheduling

If events continue to progress along a proposed course of action, the 2011-12 school year will be quite different for the Wa-Nee school district. Exactly how the year would be subject to change was a primary topic of discussion at the Monday, March 28 meeting of the Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees.
