WAKARUSA — Love is a many-splendored thing and it is even more rewarding when the relationship lasts for decades. When the marriage lasts through a family-run business, working side by side every day and still being able to enjoy one another’s company, it is something truly special.
The following local couples shared their success stories in honor of the annual holiday of love, Valentine’s Day.

Woodview students help hospital help students

NAPPANEE — St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s daily operational costs to help extend children’s lives is $1.7 million and that cost is covered primarily by public donations. Woodview Elementary School Counselor Nicki Wiggins said St. Jude’s initiative inspired her to try to get the school involved because it a charity that was all about “kids helping kids.”

Warsaw man arrested for indecent exposure

WARSAW — A Warsaw man was arrested by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies for reportedly exposing himself to Amish school children. 
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies were notified Saturday of an indecent exposure incident that had occurred last Friday, Jan. 27 outside an Amish school southeast of Nappanee in Kosciusko County. 
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives continued the investigation into this week, and were able to obtain a license plate number that led them to Darrin Ray Gibbs, 46, 2441 West, County Road 250 South,Warsaw. 

NWHS Scholastic Art winners

The NorthWood High School art department announced it had five students that placed in the 2012 NW Indiana & Lower Southwest Michigan Region of The Alliance for Young Writers and Artists.
Regional judging took place Saturday, Jan. 21 at the South Bend Museum of Art and jurors judging the student art work based their selections on technical proficiency, originality and emergence of a personal style or vision.

Rumors true about Dollar General closing

WAKARUSA — The dawning hours of Friday, Feb. 3 were dimly lit by bleary, dreary skies, and a damp fog hovering over Wakarusa that caused school delays and hampered morning commutes.
Yet in spite of the haze, there was no mistaking the words that were hastily etched on two pieces of paper —‚ one red, the other yellow — taped over the doors of the local Dollar General store. 
The messages read simply, “Closed.”

Local Rotarians promote education

NAPPANEE — Rotarians worldwide strive toward making the motto “Service Above Self” a mission that benefits in and beyond their general communities.
They focus on peace and conflict prevention and resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation issues; good maternal and child health; economic and community development; and basic education and literacy. To help promote the latter in Nappanee, members of Rotary International recently donated dictionaries to every third grade student in the Wa-Nee school district.

Thrift Shop looking for more shoppers

NAPPANEE — A local thrift shop is “bursting at the seams” and volunteers of the mission hope for more customers to take advantage of the quality items offered there at unheard of prices.
Right now the abundance filling the two rooms at the Nappanee United Methodist Church’s Thrift Shop is primarily winter items, though the shop sells books, magazines, shoes, housewares, children’s items, toys, hats, jewelry, home decor, linens and more — even egg cartons for a penny — and including clothing for men, women and children from newborn to adults size 3X.

Wa-Nee couples wanted

Advance News is looking for Wa-Nee area couples that have been married for more than 20 years that have also worked for the same business for at least as long, for a Valentine’s Day feature. Volunteers need only give about 20 minutes of their time and a photo of the couple will be needed.

Financial Aid Night Jan. 30 at NWHS

NAPPANEE — NorthWood High School is hosting a financial aid night Monday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
The program will provide financial aid information to high school seniors and their parents, or anyone else in the community, who plans to attend a post-secondary institution during the 2012-13 school year.
