‘Mathletes’ fare well in second pentathlon

Only a handful of days remain until the students and staff of Wakarusa Elementary usher in a well-deserved respite and dive headlong into summer vacation.
But before they look ahead to the conclusion of the 2010-11 school year, several students in grades four and five took time out of their weekend to arrive on campus and participate in a friendly competition to showcase their math skills. On the morning of Saturday, May 14, 41 students challenged their peers in the school’s second annual math pentathlon.

Log cabin is focus of May Second Saturdays

Nappanee’s Second Saturdays May 14 feature is Dave and Bets Hahn’s public opening of their c.1860 log cabin tour.
The Hahns moved and restored the cabin onto their property just north of Nappanee. 
Visit the farm between 1 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 each, available at the door or at L.J. Wagner, Antiques on the Square, Downtown Design and Consign, Veni’s Sweet Shop, Metzler’s Shoes and Everlastings or the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce office.
Children 12 and under are free.

Early bird registration for joint chamber golf outing under way

The annual Joint Chamber Golf Outing will be held June 14 at McCormick Creek Golf Course in Nappanee. The event will raise funds for both the Wakarusa and Nappanee Chambers of Commerce which support Dollars for Scholars, free community events and co-operative retail efforts. 
“This year’s golf outing has increased corporate sponsorship and we expect more golfers and even more prizes than last year,” tournament director Greg Taylor said. “It should be a terrific outing again this year.”

Waterline insurance not related to any city programs

May 2, Nappanee Water Superintendent/Manager Gale Gerber issued a warning to local residents regarding offers for alleged insurance  for waterlines.
Area residents have reported being contacted by an unknown source trying to sell insurance for city waterlines coming into individual homes. Those reporting wanted to make the city of Nappanee aware of the solicitiation in case it was not affiliated with the city itself, or city programs.

3 NorthWood academic teams qualify for state

Competitions were held across the state of Indiana April 19 for every school which chose to field academic teams in the following areas: English, fine arts, science, cat, social studies, and interdisciplinary. The top five teams from each class qualified for the state finals.
NorthWood academic teams competed at the area meet at Northridge High School. After computing scores for the other 63 schools which competed in Class 2, three NWHS teams — fine arts, social studies, and interdisciplinary — qualified for the state finals, to be held May 7, at Purdue University.

Hahns rebuilding history

NAPPANEE — As an auctioneer and antiques enthusiast, when Dave Hahn was delivering fuel to a customer (of Henschen Oil) on C.R. 46, and saw the aged log home sitting on the property, he knew it was something he had to have. His wife Bets, also an enthusiast, was — at first — not as sure. “It was covered in siding and had drywall inside,” the food director for Wa-Nee Schools said. “He asked the owner (Nancy Miller) if he could have it, and she said that as long as he took it and left the area like it was never there, he could.”

Local quilt mural artist gives time and talents to Chinese government

NAPPANEE — Jeff Stillson is known throughout Elkhart County for his beautiful work in creating quilt murals on display in each city participating in the annual quilt garden walk each summer.
His hometown of Nappanee boasts additional downtown murals from the master artist. Now his work is known, and recognized, in foreign lands after a March trip to China where he painted a mural for the Chinese government.

‘Arf!’ opens tonight at NorthWood High

Some folks in Wakarusa may have been inclined to ask a second- or third-grader if there is anything noteworthy taking place at school as of late.
And those inquiring may have heard the excited and enthusiastic response of “Arf!” This would not be the youngster’s best impersonation of a puppy, but rather, the name of a whimsical musical taking place this week at NorthWood High School.

Lilac room ready for business at The Inn at Amish Acres

NAPPANEE — The Lilac meeting room is the latest refurbishment done at The Inn at Amish Acres. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held the evening of April 12 to introduce it to the public. Members of the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce were in attendance as well as Amish Acres executives and managers, Elkhart Mayor Larry Thompson, and area business owners and managers.
