Coppes awards free throw contest winners

NAPPANEE — Coppes Commons was abuzz with Nappanee’s Embrace Second Saturdays theme March Madness, complete with a kids free throw contest Feb. 10.
Kids, ages 6 through 14, competed against their peers for a chance to win a basketball signed by Notre Dame basketball coaches. Each participant attempted to make 10 free-throw shots. Whoever made the most baskets was named winner.
The winner in each age group received a basketball. Girls earned a basketball signed by ND women’s coach Muffet McGraw. The boys were rewarded with a basketball signed by ND men’s coach Mike Brey.

Teens named ‘Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year’

GOSHEN — Three area teens were named Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year and represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middlebury, Nappanee and Goshen. The Youth of the Year program recognizes outstanding contributions to a Boys & Girls Clubs member’s family, school, community and Club as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome by a Youth of the Year competitor.

Nappanee, Wakarusa retailers showcased at Elkhart’s Concord Mall

ELKHART — Nappanee and Wakarusa retailers are planning to showcase their wares in another town this weekend. No, they’re not taking up business elsewhere, but Concord Mall Marketing Director Deb Alwine explained that to celebrate the shopping center’s 40th anniversary, special events are planned throughout the month and beyond for area communities to take part in.

Kick up your heels this weekend at NorthWood

NAPPANEE — The remake of the 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon was released last October across the country but NorthWood’s drama and choral performers will “pull Louise off her knees” if not spur attendees to the Nappanee production to “kick up their Sunday heels.”
This classic tale of teen energy unable to be repressed features 10 fun dance numbers, singing, fighting, and a roller-coaster of turmoil that is released when the townspeople accept that their emotions should not be contained. The fast-paced drama revolves around Ren McCormack (played by Martin Flowers) and his new friends.

Bi-annual Children’s Resale March 24

WAKARUSA — In the dawning hours of Saturday, March 24, there promises to be a whirlwind of excitement and activity at the Wakarusa Missionary Church. 
The day will usher in another presentation of the shopping experience known as the Children’s Resale, now in its 11th year. The doors will open promptly at 8 a.m., and guests will be welcome until 1 p.m. at the church located at 202 W. Waterford St., two blocks west of downtown Wakarusa. 

Nappanee man perishes after moped accident

ETNA GREEN — A Nappanee man was airlifted by Parkview Samaritan helicopter to Fort Wayne Parkview Regional Medical Center after a moped crash in Kosciusko County Saturday night that left him in a very critical condition. The Allen County Coroner’s Office reported that Jimmy W. Coates, 47, 406 E. Market St., Nappanee, later died (March 19) as a result of those injuries.

Class prevents women from being victims

It’s likely you will if live in the area and can attend a self-defense course at Bremen Family Martial Arts. Professional instructors and blackbelts Larry Maxson (fourth degree belt and business owner), Keith Fraine (fourth degree) and Loren Riddle (sixth degree) will offer women the opportunity to empower themselves with the tools they need to keep themselves from being victims, and to keep them safer should they become victims.

History taught with real life examples

NAPPANEE — One Woodview Elementary School educator is carrying on a school tradition that has gone on since before the school was built 20 years ago. The history lesson involving Pioneer Day is one the students enjoy and perhaps better grasp because they get to experience a taste of it themselves.

WAKARUSA — The 43rd Annual Wakarusa Maple Syrup Educational Days, March 20 through 23 offer a “Birds Eye View” of Wakarusa and the surrounding area as identical miniature buildings depict how it was in the 1960s.
