Miller named Indiana State Festival Queen

NAPPANEE — Mahala Miller, the 2012 Nappanee Apple Festival Queen, won the Indiana State Festivals Association Scholarship Pageant in November in Indianapolis.
Miller was shocked.
“I did not expect to win,” she said. “I felt incredibly grateful that my family and fiancé came to support me.”

Olson, Black Swish dominate Jimtown

NAPPANEE — NorthWood’s defense was on top of its game most of the night as the Black Swish beat Jimtown 53-28 in non-conference action last Thursday night.
Between NorthWood’s pressure defense and the Lady Jimmies cold shooting resulted in a first quarter shutout for the Black Swish. Senior Maddie Schwartz and junior Morgan Olson led the defensive effort in the first quarter with two steals a piece.
Swartz and junior Taylor Fielstra got the offense rolling scoring the first two baskets of the game much to the delight of NorthWood Head Coach Steve Neff.

Brown replaced by Dermott

Nappanee Common Council members announced Dec. 3 that councilwoman Janet Brown would step down from her Council Person At-Large position at year’s end. Brown has completed the first year of a four-year term.
It was announced that Jacob Dermott, who resides in the city’s Arbor Court, will fill Brown’s at-large position for the remaining three years of her term.

Everence awards grant to Family Christian Development Center

Town manager receives raise in pay

WAKARUSA — Wakarusa Town Council members reviewed the performance of Town Manager, Jeff Troxel, over the past five months since he first took position in the office.
All were in agreement at the monthly meeting Dec. 4 that Troxel has had good performance warranting the need for a raise in pay. Troxel’s starting pay was $53,500 a year. The Council voted to immediately increase that amount by $4,000, and potentially another $1,500 upon his review after service of one full year.

Nappanee to expand coverage to Union Township

NAPPANEE — Members of the Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety voted Dec. 10 to expand Union Township fire coverage to include automatic assistance from Nappanee Paramedic Emergency Services.
The decision will not increase the already-approved annual contract with the township in the amount of $10,300.
Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson stated the decision was made not only for the protection of the city volunteer firemen responding, but also to have Emergency Medical Technicians onsite to assist with any victims suffering from encounters with smoke and fire.

Special season for musical director

BREMEN — Beth Webster, director of the Maxinkuckee Singers for the past 20 years will cherish this season’s performances more than most.
That’s because this year will be her last.
“Leaving the group is going to be very bittersweet for me but I feel in my heart it’s time to turn the baton over,” Webster explained. “I probably won’t feel it fully until February when they begin rehearsing again, and I’m not with them.”
Webster said that she will still be proud to see their progress and looks forward to watching them perform in the spring during the warmer season’s schedule.

Earth Club making a difference

WAKARUSA — The Earth needs more environmentally-smart people, especially in the next generation.
Tina Green, a NorthWood Middle School math teacher, is helping with just that. Green started the Earth Club, also known as Green Club, in the spring of 2009 at NorthWood Middle School.
When asked why she chose to start this program she explained, “This club grew out of a shared passion for preserving our environment.”

Florist moves locations

NAPPANEE —  Floral Cascades, a local florist shop that opened April 29, 2011 has moved. Joel Corbin, manager of the florists shop, said the move took place over the Labor Day weekend.
“Floral Cascades moved for a better location and easier accessibility,” he said. “We provide personal, customized service for any occasion.” He explained that the business has talented designers that will create beautiful fresh or silk, floral arrangements for any occasion and will deliver them locally, or to anywhere in the world.
