East Lincoln Street project completed

NAPPANEE — City officials joined local residents last week in celebrating the end to construction along what is now being called the East Lincoln Street Corridor.
Construction there turned an alley into a city roadway along the south side of Coppes Commons. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday, Dec. 9 to mark the re-opening of the Corridor which has been under construction since April.
The City of Nappanee paid $108,976 for the construction. The State of Indiana paid the remaining 80 percent of the approximate $1.09 million project.

‘Rudolph’ runners withstand weather

NAPPANEE — Though the weather outside was frightful, runners and walkers proved that weather conditions were not an obstacle when it came to raising money for a good cause.
More than 70 runners and walkers braved the 39-degree temperature Dec. 3 at McCormick Creek Golf Course for the first “Run Run Rudolph” run/walk put on by NorthWood High School members of the National Honor Society to benefit the annual Christmas Jubilee put on by members of the Family Christian Development Center (FCDC).

Holiday scene like a storybook

WAKARUSA —Wakarusa looked like a page pulled out of a Dr. Seuss storybook featuring the town of Whoville the evening of Dec. 5 when the Chamber of Commerce put on its annual “Christmas Around the Tree” event.
Townspeople of all ages, many decked in holiday attire or wearing Santa hats or antlers gathered at the town’s center in front of a mammoth Christmas tree decked in white lights. There they visited with friends and neighbors, partook in free cookies (made by Grandma’s Pantry) and hot coca served up by with Wakarusa Chamber Board Member, Lois Meissner and “Doc” (Dr. Robert) Abel.

Grand opening celebrated

WAKARUSA — “We just keep passing on blessings” said Sharla Weldy, owner of the high-quality consignment store New To You in downtown Wakarusa, who is feeling very blessed herself. Weldy and her husband Shane bought New To You  two-and-a-half years ago in the 900-square-foot storefront on N. Elkhart Street but have moved to 109 E. Waterford St. into a 3,000 square foot building (two doors down from Wakarusa Dime Store). 

Jingling bells

The annual Open Door bell ringing has begun. Members of the Nappanee service clubs, Kiwanis and Rotary as well as the Scouts have volunteered for the two-weekend project. Pictured are members from the Nappanee Boy Scout Troop #733 that rang the bells at Rite Choice Foods, last Saturday. Those members (from left) are Danny Fattorusso, McGwire Nickerson and James Fisher. The bells will be ringing again at the following locations again this coming Saturday, Dec. 17: Alco, Chiphone, and Rite Choice Food. All money donated will go to the Open Door food pantry.

Historic home tours a privilege for Homespun Christmas events

NAPPANEE — During the Embrace Second Saturdays Homespun Christmas activities, the public is offered a special privilege, to tour two historic homes (within walking distance from one another). From 4 to 6 p.m. for $5 per person (for both tours) visitors can see inside The Homespun Country Inn, and the Timothy and Jennifer Weaver home, both in Nappanee.

More than tours for Second Saturday

NAPPANEE — The home tours associated with this week’s Second Saturdays event are sure to be a hit but equally inviting are the specials and attractions local businesses are offering.
The excitement begins during Midnight Madness Friday evening from 4 to 8:15 p.m. when shoppers can collect stickers to place on their “passports” found at local participating businesses. Once filled, the “passports” can be taken to Main Street Coffee House, 105 N. Main St. for a drawing to be held at 8:30 p.m. for gift baskets full of wares from area merchants. Participants must be present to win.

Santa Claus was visiting children at the Nappanee Public Library last Saturday. Little ones like Lilliana Sue Faughender didn’t need to bring a list or tell him their holiday wishes because the old elf knows what they want anyway. Santa will be at the library again this Saturday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pictures with him are available at no charge, compliments in part by the Miracles at Main and Market Streets committee.

NAPPANEE — For just less than two years, the Wa-Nee school community has made it one of its top priorities to embrace the practices of energy conservation. And in recognition for their extraordinary efforts, the district has been heralded with an esteemed honor. The designation, known as the “Award for Energy Stewardship,” was presented to the Board of School Trustees during its session held Nov. 28.
