Parks super to retire in March

NAPPANEE — Four city employees – including Parks Department Superintendent Wayne Scheumann – announced their retirement.
The announcements came during the Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety meeting on Feb. 19.
Scheumann announced his retirement from the Nappanee Parks and Recreation Department as superintendent and manager.
“Wayne has been an inspirational leader,” said Nappanee Clerk-Treasurer Kim Ingle, who worked closely with Scheumann on parks department matters, including costs, equipment and programs. “He will be greatly missed.”

Drug charges filed against Nappanee men

GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office filed formal charges of dealing methamphetamine against a pair of Nappanee men whose suspected meth lab is believed responsible for starting a house fire earlier this month.
Prosecutors charged Charles D. Thompson, 52, 455 W. Indiana Ave., and Dana J. Hall, 55, 402 S. Main St., with dealing methamphetamine.
The charge is a Class A felony punishable by 20-50 years in prison if found guilty. The men were arraigned on the charges late last week in Elkhart Circuit Court, officials said.

Nappanee’s Biggest Loser event returns

New jelly bean flavors revealed

WAKARUSA — Wakarusa Dime Store is saluting Notre Dame for its’ undefeated season with this year’s release of a new flavor of Jumbo Jelly Beans honoring the tradition of Notre Dame Football.
Candies come and go but the Wakarusa Dime Store’s Jumbo Jelly Beans have been around for 44 years. First introduced as a specialty candy for the Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival, the candy has caught on and continues to grow by leaps and bounds since 1969.
Selling just more than 100 pounds in its first year, the Wakarusa Dime Store sold close to 100 tons in calendar year 2012.

Legion Sons looking for deserving recipient

NAPPANEE — The military may be in search of a few good men but the Sons of the American Legion Nappanee Post #154 are looking for just one.
That’s because they want to give a home to an severely disabled local veteran.
“We hold fundraisers all the time,” explained Al White, local squadron rep and 2nd Vice Commander of the Nappanee SAL. “We work with the community and help veterans. … We just gave $2,000 to the veteran’s home in South Bend. But we’re involved with the Homes for Wounded Veterans program and are hoping to build a home in Nappanee.”

Bailey charged with murder of Hopper

GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney Curtis T. Hill, Jr. has authorized the filing of a formal charge of murder against Luis A. Bailey, 17, of 19751 County Road 18, Elkhart, for the murder of 74-year-old Norma Jean Hopper of 54640 Michael Dr., Elkhart. 
The charge has been filed in the Elkhart Circuit Court.  Although Bailey is a juvenile, under Indiana law, juvenile jurisdiction does not apply, and Bailey is being charged as an adult.

Two injured in buggy versus car accident

NAPPANEE —  A Milford toddler and her father were taken to a South Bend hospital last night in serious condition after their buggy collided with a car near Nappanee last Dec. 28.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency responders were dispatched Friday night at approximately 6:19 p.m. to a car vs. Amish buggy crash. Officers and Nappanee EMS and Fire Department located the vehicle and buggy carriage near the location of 5414 West, County Road 1350 North at a driveway entrance.

2012 Sectional Champions!!!

In an explosion of gleeful chaos, NorthWood players, staff and fans hoist Jakayah Qaiyim to their shoulders as he raises the sectional championship prize trophy for all to see. Qaiyim led the Panthers with 17 points. Come sectional time, seniors are supposed to step up and lead the way and that was exactly what happened for the NorthWood Panther boys basketball team, as Derek Yoder and Jakayah Qaiyim combined for 23 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists to boost the Panthers to a 58-45 victory over West Noble in the Class 3A sectional title game at The Pit.
