Warner recognized for passion for history

NAPPANEE — Bill Warner’s volunteerism and passion for sharing local history was honored during the Nappanee Historic Preservation Commission awards night.
Warner has volunteered countless hours of research and sharing of history involving Coppes Brothers Kitchen Cabinet Company, Nappanee. He holds office space inside the renovated kitchen cabinet factory now known as Coppes Commons.
He received the Historic Educator Award from the historic preservation commission during the group’s annual Awards Night on Thursday, May 2.

NWHS academic team captures state

WEST LAFAYETTE — Five of six NorthWood High School academic teams competed at the State Academic Super Bowl which was held at Purdue University on May 4.
The NorthWood teams sparred with the very best teams in the state for the coveted prize of state championship titles.
The NorthWood High School interdisciplinary team finished strong by winning a State Championship in the very last round.
The fine arts and social studies teams earned state runner-up titles, while science and math earned third and fourth place.

Public invited to police, fire walk

NAPPANEE — Individuals, groups, organizations and business and industry teams are invited to walk, bike or run on Saturday, May 18, in the fifth annual Nappanee Police and Firefighter Memorial Walk.
Participants are encouraged to seek donations from sponsors contributing toward their participation in the event, and collect the money before the walk.

Rose to sing at United Methodist

NAPPANEE — Kali Rose, 2011 Inspirational Country Music Awards Female Vocalist of the Year, will perform a pair of concerts at Nappanee United Methodist Church, 301 E. Market St.
Rose will perform at the 8 and 10 a.m. services on Sunday, May 26.
The public is invited to hear Rose present her gospel message of faith and family
Rose has been nominated for the Inspirational Country Music Awards Female Vocalist of the Year three years in a row and won the award in 2011.

BREMEN — Otis R. “Doc” Bowen, who rose from a rural Fulton County upbringing to the apex of state leadership and eventually into the national spotlight, died Saturday.
He was 95.
“I think to the people of Marshall County, he was above politics,” David Holmes, county GOP chair, said Sunday. “If you were a Democrat or a Republican, I don’t think it made much difference. You were a fan of ‘Doc’ Bowen.”
Bowen died at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Catherine Kasper Life Center in Donaldson, Ind.

NWHS drama presenting “Almost, Maine”

NAPPANEE — On Friday, May 10, Saturday, May 11, and Sunday, May 12, NorthWood Drama will have its final show of the year, “Almost, Maine.” Set in the mythical township of Almost, this poignant and funny show depicts the events that occur at 9 on a Friday evening in Almost, Maine. Sometimes touching, but also very funny and entertaining, the various scenes explore relationships between the inhabitants of the township.

Emmick to be featured speaker

NAPPANEE — Paul Emmick, chief meteorologist for South Bend-based television station WSBT, will be the featured speaker for this year’s Nappanee Chamber of Commerce awards luncheon.
The lunch is 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Amish Acres.
Table sponsorships, including seating for eight, table sign and preferential seating, are available for $250.
Individual tickets are $25.
Seating is limited, according to Darla Burns with the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce.

Council gets lesson in local operations

NAPPANEE — Who decides what time Nappanee residents must turn down their music and other sounds which may violate the city noise ordinance?
Exactly who is responsible for paying the bills on city repairs and equipment?
These were just a few of the questions answered during the Nappanee Common Council meeting on Monday, March 4.
Clerk-Treasurer Kim Ingle presented to the council a detailed look at how city government works – what groups are responsible for finances, ordinances and other measures of city governing.

Panthers fall in Sectional championship

SYRACUSE — NorthWood’s 1-2 punch of Jonathan Wilkinson and Zach Zurcher, who combined for 34 points, was not enough to counter the combined 50 points from the three-pronged attack of Tippecanoe Valley’s Nick Kindig, Chainey Zolman and Tanner Andrews, as the Vikings defeated the Panthers 60-51 to capture the Class 3A Sectional championship at Wawasee High School, on Saturday, March 2.
It was the second tournament victory by Valley over NorthWood this season, the previous win coming in the holiday tournament by a 59-53 score.

Board OKs $1.7M bid for work:Wakarusa firm gets contract for NorthWood addition

NAPPANEE — Progress is already being made on the future NorthWood High School addition, well before the first spadeful of earth has even been turned.
During the Feb. 25 session of the Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees, a local contractor was chosen to take on the approaching construction, set to begin this spring.
Members elected to move forward with the proposal presented by Brown and Brown General Contractors of Wakarusa.
