Go Go Joe!

September 8, 2014

NAPPANEE -- The Round Barn Theater at Amish Acres is a special place.
It attracts young talent from across America to its show.
The current one is "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
Matt Casey plays the title role. It is a physically demanding as well as exceptionally challenging role for a singer, actor and the guy who has to carry the content forward at every moment.

Lily and Rusty

September 2, 2014

Way to go, rookie.
To win at anything, it takes a team
Whether it be your family, or friends, the community or a combination of all three, children who get support form the bigger kids know that support is so important.
So it is with 12-year-old Lily Bowser, a NorthWood Middle School seventh-grader, who entered the competitive world of 4-H steer raising and did not win at the Elkhart County Fair.
Undismayed, she took Rusty on down to the State Fair, more to experience the whole process than anything else.

Senior Leader "For The Good of the Team"

September 2, 2014

It is a scene repeated on fields across America. Big city or rural town. It is all the same.
The high school football team sprints through drills on the practice field.
It is late August. This day is less hot than yesterday, but tell that to the large linemen lumbering across the way.
The speed guys seem affected not at all.
The coach is manic, of course, he the assistants yelling at every mistake, real or imagined.

Steered Straight: A Wonderful Donation

August 29, 2014

NAPPANEE -- Lane Flowers made $17,450 at the county 4-H auction for his latest project, a steer called Cornbelly.
He gave it all away.
Not part of it.
All of it.
Seed to Feed received the donation. Flowers made the check presentation at the annual 4-H awards banquet.
Mayor Larry Thompson of Nappanee gave Flowers a key to the city, a "Community Spirit Award," an inspirational book and even slipped in, as he so often does, a donation from the mayor and his wife, this time to Seed and Feed.
By the way, Lane is just now a freshman at NorthWood High School.

You Know Max

August 29, 2014

NAPPANEE -- Everyone knows Max.
Perhaps that is why Max Bigler is the Grand Marshall of this year's Nappanee Apple Festival, Sept. 18-21.
As you go around town and talk to folks, you probably get as far as, "Do you know Max . . . " before almost everyone will have a story on the guy and will fill in the last name before you can.
Max gets around. It is thought if the city needs help at the 2020 Census, all they will have to do is ask Max.
