KNOX — Emojean Taulbee, 77, of Knox, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Porter Regional Hospital, Valparaiso.
Emojean was born Jan. 13, 1936 in McLaughlin County, Kentucky to Ham and Pruda Cole, both preceded her in death.
On Aug. 13, 1960, Emojean married James Taulbee in Knox, Indiana.
Emojean worked at Walker Manufacturing in Culver before her retirement.
She was a woman of devout faith, who loved spending time with her family — her children and grandchildren were the light of her life.

Hall sentences Carter to 6 months DOC, more

KNOX — The message sent out in Starke County Circuit Court today was clear: Do the crime, you do the time.
Starke County Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall sentenced Jennie Carter to six months in the Indiana Department of Corrections, six months of house arrest, six months probation, and a $2500 fine.

Community Foundation unveils preschool scholarship program

STARKE — The Starke County Community Foundation (SCCF), a fund affiliate of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation (NICF), is embarking on an exciting and innovative local project. In partnership with local preschools, schools, and other organizations, the SCCF is establishing a preschool scholarship program for the children of Starke County.

OD Schools placed on lockdown

HAMLET - Oregon-Davis Community School Corporation (OD) went on lockdown this morning after threatening graffiti was found on the boy's bathroom wall at the high school.
The graffiti is believed to have been left during a basketball tournament that took place at the high school on Saturday.
"When the graffiti was discovered, we immediately contacted Sheriff Oscar Cowen at the Starke County Sheriff's Department. They sent over a detective to take some photos. We also contacted our Student Resource Officer Freddy Baker,"OD School's Superintendent Dr. Steve Disney said.

Starke prosecutor drops charges against Knox teacher

Former Knox Middle School teacher Todd Boldry has voluntarily permanently surrendered his teaching license, and a motion to dismiss the charges against him was filed Wednesday, Feb. 27 with Starke County Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall, who granted the state's motion to dismiss today. However, the granting of the state's motion is just a formality of sorts, as the power to charge or drop charges lies with the state.

Judge Hall finds Carter guilty of theft from Starke Tourism

KNOX — Jennie Carter was found guilty of theft, a Class D felony, in Starke County Circuit Court Monday, Feb. 25. The charge stemmed from a $7,748.60 check Carter wrote in 2011 on the Starke County Tourism account and used the funds for personal expenses. Sentencing is scheduled at 10 a.m. March 25.

Head Start bus hit by commercial flatbed

KNOX — Fourteen children and two adults, including the driver were taken to IU Health Starke Hospital this morning after the Marshall - Starke Head Start Bus they were traveling in, bus No. 37 was hit by a commercial flatbed vehicle.
Knox City Police are investigating the accident, which happened at the intersection of U.S. 35 and Lake Street, in Knox, at 7:57 a.m.

A college degree is closer than you think

Carter trial begins: Prosecutor says charge is theft, defense says conversion

KNOX — Jennie Carter’s trial for theft, a Class D felony, began Wednesday in the Starke County Circuit Court with Judge Kim Hall presiding, and will continue at 1 p.m. Monday. The trial, originally slated as a jury trial, was changed to a bench trial during pretrial motions held Tuesday, Feb. 19. The charge is based on a $7,748.40 check from the Starke County Tourism account that allegedly was written by Carter, who was then a member of the tourism board, and used for her personal expenses.

Bond denied for woman accused of Knox murder

STARKE — Kathleen Holt, 51, of Knox, was officially charged Friday for the Feb. 13 murder of Ron Worker, 46. Appearing before Judge Kim Hall in Starke Circuit Court, Holt was unemotional as Judge Hall read the charges – “count one of murder by a handgun shot to the chest resulting in death,” which carries a 45- to 55-year sentence. She plead not guilty.
