Starke County man robbed at gunpoint in home invasion, 2 men in custody

Two men are in custody following a manhunt which began Friday morning in Starke County and ended up in LaPorte County early Friday evening.
Officers from the Starke County Sheriff's Department received a phone call at about 10:46 a.m. Friday morning about a possible home invasion. They arrived at a residence in the 3000 block of 400 N., where the alleged incident occurred. There, officers learned from the victim that two people he knew had entered his home and battered him with a gun. The victim then told police that he was forced at gunpoint to open his gun safe.

Missing Knox teens found

Two Starke County girls, who went missing Thursday evening, have been found. Faith Moore and Nikki Scheib, both 15, left their homes yesterday evening to have dinner and never returned home.
Their parents, Sheala Moore and Tanya Scheib contacted the local authorities and then spent the evening sending out frantic pleas for information from anyone who knew the girls’ whereabouts.
A missing poster with the girls pictures went up on Facebook; and the story began traveling from page to page.

Grovertown woman says Planning Commission not enforcing Starke County building codes

GROVERTOWN — Betty Dotlich, of Grovertown, appeared before the Starke County Commissioners to get the status on a property located at 6690 East 250 North, Grovertown. Dotlich has made several appearances before the commission and Starke County BZA to lodge complaints about the structure and the fact that it is being used as a dwelling, which Dotlich said is against the county’s building codes.

Skronski receives lifetime achievement award

KNOX — Starke County Circuit Court Clerk Evelyn Skronski received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Indiana 2012 election conference, which was held in Indianapolis Dec. 13 and 14.
The award is given to the individual (clerk) whose outstanding career embodies leadership, strength and determination, coupled with friendliness and service to all citizens and voters throughout the state of Indiana. This nomination is made by a county election board member and decided by the Indiana Election Division.

CVS Pharmacy robbed

December 21, 2011

At approximately 9:15 p.m., Knox City Police were called to CVS Pharmacy on U.S. 35 after two men robbed the Knox store.
The suspects fled the scene, leading police on a chase that ended just north of S.R. 8 on Upas Road, where the robbers ditched their vehicle. The vehicle was located in a driveway at a residence near the Marshall/Starke County line.
More information is expected to be released later today.
Police arrested one of the suspects in Marshall County.

Starke County awarded more than 190 k for debris removal

December 13, 2011

Starke County was recently awarded $190,140 grant for debris removal on the Yellow River. The grant award was through the Disaster Recovery Act. Starke County Surveyor Dennis Estok says the money is much needed and will be used to remove fallen trees and log jams from the river.
One area of concern runs from the Starke-Marshall County line to U.S. 35 in Knox.
Estok said Starke County is one of the few Indiana counties to apply for and receive this grant.

'Shop Local' program back for 2nd year

It’s back!  Come on In and support your local economy – and get a free chance to win holiday cash at the same time. From Nov. 29 through Dec. 16, the Starke County Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring the “Shop Local” program. Customers will shop at participating member’s establishments and receive a card with that business’s unique stamp. Use the same card to get stamped by another participating member. Once the card is filled with eight different stamps, the card can be brought to a drop off box and will be entered into a drawing on Dec. 17 to win cash.

Community Thanksgiving in North Judson

NORTH JUDSON — Bob and Regina Howard of North Judson shared the true meaning of Thanksgiving by opening the doors at Grand Central Station to embrace the tradition they started seven years ago. This year, they prepared 20 turkeys. The Howards said those who donated baked goods, and their time certainly helped in making this a Thanksgiving that many in the community will not forget. Already, many have said they are looking forward to next year.

Governor salutes veterans with new license plate options

INDIANAPOLIS — Governor Mitch Daniels today saluted veterans and current members of the Armed Forces with new special license plates and driver’s licenses that will be available beginning in 2012.
“Indiana is a state of patriots; no place I know reveres its veterans more.  These new plates will enable vets to express their pride in serving, but equally they'll enable their fellow citizens to identify and say thanks to those to whom we all owe so much,” said Daniels, who was joined at the event by members of each branch of service.

Knox city leaf pickup has ended 
The City of Knox Street Department would like to announce that the fall leaf program has now ended. Any leaves remaining by the curb will not be picked up in order for the street department to equip their trucks for the snow removal season. Residents who have leaves may take them to the compost site at any time.
