Santa Claus is coming to town

The city of Knox will be hosting its annual tree lighting ceremony Dec. 1 from 5-7 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center: 55 East Lake Street, Knox.
Pictures and visits with Santa,refreshments, choirs and Jazz Band.
Meet at community center tree first, not at courthouse.

A special day for Skyla

STARKE — A benefit to help 3-year-old Skyla Clabaugh, whose family lives in Knox and North Judson, will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Gospel Lighthouse Church on Pacific Avenue in Knox.
"Skyla's family will be hosting a dinner/benefit from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse church to help defray the cost of traveling back and forth for chemotherapy treatments and any medical bills," said Skyla's grandmother Missy Trent.
Ten months ago, Skyla was diagnosed with cancer.

Knox band brings home the gold for marching

Starke Library offers homebound outreach service

STARKE — The Starke County public Library will deliver books and all other items, except fiction DVDs, to people who are unable to go to the library due to extended illness, injury, or disability.
Deliveries and pickups will be every two weeks to residents within the city limits of Knox, San Pierre, and North Judson.

NORTH JUDSON — Robert E Smrt, 91, of Donaldson, formerly of North Judson, died Sept. 15, 2013 at Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson.
He is survived by a brother, Joe Smrt of Knox.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. CDT Friday, Sept. 27 with a 7 p.m. rosary service at O'Donnell Funeral Home, Inc. North Judson.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, North Judson.
Burial will be at Saint Jacobs Cemetery.

Incidents
September 9 – A fight was reported in the 800 block of East Washington Street, Knox.
• Angel Peterson reported her purse missing after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle near Heaton and St. Louis streets, Knox.
September 14 – Debra Scott reported the theft of a tent in the 500 block of South Bower Street, Knox.
September 16 – Joseph Sopcich, of South Bower Street, Knox, reported receiving a suspicious phone call from Jamaica.

Walorski, Attorney General’s office host fraud prevention workshop

August 22, 2013

KNOX — Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) and Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office will host a fraud prevention workshop Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Community Services of Starke County in Knox.
Presentations will be given on the latest scams and how seniors can protect themselves from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft. Participants do not have to register and there is no charge to attend.
The workshop will be held at 1 p.m. at the Community Services of Starke County located at 311 East Culver Road, Knox.

Knox man arrested following two incidents

August 22, 2013

KNOX — Zachary Puckett, 28, of 1000 W. Culver Road, Knox, was arrested for resisting law enforcement and assault following incidents at Zingo Express and IU Health Starke Hospital. Puckett was observed by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy at Zingo Express using profanity and becoming belligerent. Puckett then went to IU Health Starke Hospital, where he continued being belligerent. A Knox Police officer responded to the hospital, but Puckett had left.

Hamlet Police arrest three suspects in string of burglaries

HAMLET – Three people charged with multiple burglaries were arrested in Starke County by officers from the Hamlet Police Department, following a three-month investigation.
At approximately 11 a.m. on Aug. 12, officers from the Hamlet Police Department executed a search warrant  at 7733 N. Kickapoo, Walkerton. Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the search. Items from multiple burglaries in the Hamlet area were recovered at the scene, along with other items that were believed to be stolen. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia also were seized.

Trial begins next week in Upsall murder case

ROCHESTER — Roy Bell, of Rochester, will be in Fulton Superior Court Aug. 27-28 for a bench trial for his alleged role in the Nov. 22, 2011 shooting death of former Knox resident Wilma Upsall.
Upsall’s body was discovered by her daughter when she returned home to her Leiters Ford residence during the evening of Nov. 22.
Autopsy findings revealed that 81-year-old Upsall died as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted during a burglary allegedly involving Bell, William Scroggs of Delong, and Jason Miller of Plymouth. The latter two have also been charged with murder.
