KNOX — Phillip Lawrence Banasiak, 59, of Knox died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at his home.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelly Powell of Argos, Tracy Habrel of Seattle, Wash; two sisters, Gloria Piarowski of Knox, Lois Koch of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Richard Banasiak of Chicago, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Secretary of State Connie Lawson warns businesses to ignore deceptive letter

INDIANAPOLIS – Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced that some Indiana businesses have received a deceptive letter that may appear to come from the Business Services Division of her office. The letter should be ignored. It is an attempt to defraud Indiana business owners.

Flu-related deaths reach 27 in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — State health officials are now reporting 27 deaths due to flu-related illness in Indiana. The overwhelming majority of the deaths, 24, have occurred in individuals older than 65 years. By comparison, Indiana had no flu-related deaths during the 2011/12 season and three deaths in the 2010/11 flu season.

With the 24-hour news cycle, we are all well aware of the atrocities that occurred in Newtown, Conn. — where 20 children and seven adults were murdered, forever changing the lives of hundreds of children and families who once felt safe in their idyllic community. News pundits have since been casting blame at various groups. Although, if it were that simple, we'd all feel a whole lot safer today.

Starke receives funds for emergency shelter and food

STARKE CO. — Starke County has been awarded federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board for Phase 30.
Starke County has been chosen to receive $11,412 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Commissioners seek candidates for 2013 board appointments

The Starke County Commissioners are seeking interested, qualified and community-minded individuals for 2013 board appointments. Following is a list of available appointments:
Starke Regular Drain Board – One Commission appointment, three-year term.
Kankakee Iroquois Regional Plan Commission (KIRPC) – Two Commission appointments, one-year term.
Planning Commission – One Commission appointment (Republican), four-year term.
Health Board – Two Commission appointments (one Democrat and one Republican) four-year term.

Early morning chase ends in Starke

JASPER/STARKE CO. — An early morning traffic stop ended with a driver attempting to flee by driving through farm fields and residents' yards.

Jail site approved by commission

November 27, 2012

The Starke County Commissioners approved proceeding with the purchase of a new jail site at the corner of Ind. 8 and C.R. 550 E. at a special meeting today. Public comments were heard at the Commission’s regular meeting on Nov. 19. Commissioners took the information under advisement, and scheduled a special meeting for this morning (Tuesday) to make a decision on the project site.

Bass Lake girl wins 2nd in NFL competition

Taylor Lewandowski took second place in the NFL punt, pass, and kick competition at the Indianapolis Colts game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Sunday, Nov. 25. Taylor won first place in the area and regional competitions before advancing to Sunday's final competition and a second place victory. Taylor was one of five finalist to throw a final pass on Sunday. She was Awarded a special trophy football, jersey, shirt and football tee.
Taylor is the daughter of John and Sandy Lewandowski. The family resides in Bass Lake.

Residents express concerns over proposed jail site

November 20, 2012

Several residents and other interested parties attended the Starke County Council and Commission meetings Monday night to express concerns over the proposed site for the new Starke County Jail. The site is on the southwest corner of Ind. 8 and C.R. 550 E., east of Knox. Scott Carnegie, architect for the project, presented the proposed layout on the property, and a diagram of the design of the new jail utilizing the existing building for offices with the addition of new facilities for jail intake and inmate housing.
