Birth Announcement

June 20, 2013

Thomas and Rebecca Berg of Hamlet announce the birth of a son born April 26, 2013 at 3:49 a.m. at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Owen Thomas Berg weighed 9 pounds and 8 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long.
Maternal grandparents are Jim and Susan Goble of Hamlet.
Paternal grandparents are Tom Berg and Robin Trent of Grovertown.

Awareness campaign targets dangers of boating under the influence

Indiana Conservation Officers will join a national campaign in late June aimed at creating  heightened public awareness of the dangers of boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Operation Dry Water (ODW) is scheduled for June 28-30, just before the Fourth of July.
ODW (www.OperationDryWater.org) is a nationwide education and enforcement initiative developed by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard.

It's official! 'Little Savages' to commence Culver shooting this summer

CULVER — Filmmakers who scouted Culver locations last month for a possible movie shoot in Culver have announced the town has officially been chosen as the site for filming later this summer.
James Simmons, an executive producer with Bear Fruit Films (www.bearfruitfilms.com), made the announcement last week.
Simmons was joined by Bear Fruit's writer-director Paul Tomborello and associate producer Sean Stephens in talks with representatives of various Culver entities about shooting "Little Savages," a "redemptive family film," possibly including scenes shot at this year's Lake Fest.

North Judson student named president’s scholar at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE – Rachel Ammons of North Judson has been named a President’s Scholar at Indiana State University. She plans to major in nursing at Indiana State. A graduate of North Judson-San Pierre High School, Ammons is the daughter of Beth Ammons of North Judson and Kevin Ammons of Knox. While in high school, she served as National Honor Society president, president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was active in Teens vs. Cancer.

VALPARAISO — Timothy Ray Corwin, 50, of Valparaiso, formerly of Walkerton died June 12, 2013 in Porter Regional Hospital, Valparaiso.
Survivors include one sister, Michelle (David) Fowler of Walkerton; and three brothers, Patrick Corwin of Valparaiso, Joseph (Theresa) Corwin of Walkerton and Daniel (Theresa) Corwin of South Bend.  

Sheriff candidate charged with impersonating officer

June 14, 2013

PULASKI — Gregory R. Wireman has been charged with impersonation of a public servant, a Class D felony, following an incident reported to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department on Feb. 15. Due to Wireman’s involvement in Starke County, Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Stacey Mrak was appointed special prosecutor, and filed the charges in Starke Circuit Court May 31.

KNOX — Emojean Taulbee, 77, of Knox, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Porter Regional Hospital, Valparaiso.
Emojean was born Jan. 13, 1936 in McLaughlin County, Kentucky to Ham and Pruda Cole, both preceded her in death.
On Aug. 13, 1960, Emojean married James Taulbee in Knox, Indiana.
Emojean worked at Walker Manufacturing in Culver before her retirement.
She was a woman of devout faith, who loved spending time with her family — her children and grandchildren were the light of her life.

Hall sentences Carter to 6 months DOC, more

KNOX — The message sent out in Starke County Circuit Court today was clear: Do the crime, you do the time.
Starke County Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall sentenced Jennie Carter to six months in the Indiana Department of Corrections, six months of house arrest, six months probation, and a $2500 fine.

Community Foundation unveils preschool scholarship program

STARKE — The Starke County Community Foundation (SCCF), a fund affiliate of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation (NICF), is embarking on an exciting and innovative local project. In partnership with local preschools, schools, and other organizations, the SCCF is establishing a preschool scholarship program for the children of Starke County.
