Mayor reminds residents of golf cart ordinance

KNOX — Knox Mayor Rick Chambers said that with the arrival of warm people are out sight seeing in their golf carts. And there are a few rules that citizens need to remember.
A golf cart is a four-wheel vehicle. They are allowed on city streets only, not on U.S. 35 or S.R. 8. Golf cart operators can cross these highways, but cannot drive on them.
Golf carts are not permitted on sidewalks, this includes walking trails in the park.
ATVs, go carts, lawn mowers, off terrain vehicles, or motorized wheel  chairs are not allowed to be operated on city streets.

Hop aboard the Easter train

NORTH JUDSON — Hop aboard the Easter train Saturday, April 7, at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson Passengers ride in vintage cabooses, a passenger coach, or open-air sightseeing cars. The train excursion is round-trip from the depot and travels more than five miles, crossing the Kankakee River at English Lake, before returning to North Judson. The train then continues on to a park, along the railroad tracks, where passengers disembark for an Easter Egg Hunt and a visit with the Easter Bunny.

Schwenk named Lilly Scholar

HAMLET — An Oregon-Davis Jr./Sr. High School student has been named the recipient of a full, four-year scholarship as the Starke County Community Foundation 2012 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Katelyn Schwenk will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Knox board approves Corbin suspension

KNOX — The Knox Community School Board approved a letter of suspension for Ryan Corbin. Corbin, 27, is a Knox High School gym teacher and girls and boys varsity swim coach. Corbin is accused of  inappropriate behavior with a 16-year-old student and has been charged with two counts of attempted child seduction, class D felonies. Knox Superintendent A.J. Gappa and the other board members did not discuss the suspension or charges at the meeting and had no comments on the matter.

Knox teacher arrested for child seduction

Robert "Ryan" Corbin was arrested Sunday, April 1 and is being held at the Starke County Jail on preliminary charges of child seduction.
Corbin, 27, was arrested following an investigation that began last Wednesday, when the parent of a Knox High School student lodged a complaint regarding improper Internet contact between a student and teacher.
Corbin teaches physical education at Knox High School.
He is also the varsity girls and boys swim coach.
Knox City Police are still investigating the matter and no more information will be released until the investigation is completed.

State police deadline for dropping off illegal substances draws near

INDIANAPOLIS — Last week, Governor Daniels signed into law House Enrolled Act No. 1196 which immediately made a number of formerly legal but hazardous substances illegal to possess, transport, or sell in the state of Indiana.
To provide a method for retailers and private citizens to dispose of these now illegal substances, all Indiana State Police posts will permit any quantity of these drugs to be dropped off at any state police post until Sunday, March 25.

Community Foundation scholarship deadline

Parents and students are searching for ways to lessen the burden of paying for college and the Starke County Community Foundation offers many scholarships that help local families do just that.
There are more than 20 scholarships that have been created by people who believe in education and want to help local students. The opportunities for scholarship dollars are varied and cover a wide range of criteria. Whether a graduating senior, current college student, or non-tradition student there are scholarships available at the Community Foundation.

Former Knox woman found slain in home

VALPARAISO — Shawnna Forgus, 22, of Valparaiso, was discovered beaten in her home Tuesday morning by her 5-year-old son.
Police were called to the residence, located in the 400 block of Courtney St., just blocks from Valparaiso University, at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Forgus, formerly of Knox, was not breathing when police arrived at the scene.
Police are releasing little information. However, family and friends of the victim have said that Forgus left her home Monday night and was seen leaving a bar with a male friend.
