Benefit to help Starke County child

MICHIGAN CITY — Brandon Waldron is a 9-year-old boy who recently underwent surgery at Riley’s Children’s Hospital to re-move two brain tumors.
Some of Brandon's medical costs, as well as ongoing procedures, are not covered through his medical insurance.
A benefit to help alleviate these burdens as well as give him the care he needs will be held Saturday, Dec. 14 from 4 p.m. to midnight at the American Legion Sqwiat Post 451, Michigan City (by Ames Field).
Tickets for the benefit are $10.
There will be:
Live bands
Spaghetti dinner 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Cash bar
Raffles
Karoke

Tree lighting event well attended

KNOX — Mayor Rick Chambers and the City of Knox Community Center Planning Committee would like to thank the following people who either participated or donated items for the city's annual tree lighting ceremony and a visit with Santa on Dec. 1.
Walgreen’s, who took pictures of the visits with Santa at no charge; Santa & his elves; Starke County Choralaires; Tomahawk Jazz Band from Knox Community School; Knox Middle School Choir; Clint Norem Family; City of Knox Police; Street & Fire Departments; the donor of the cookies; the press; and for those who attended.

Indiana receives grant to increase local foods in school cafeterias

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Department of Health announced today it is one of 71 projects spanning 42 states and Washington, D.C. to receive the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm to School Program grant. This is an effort to better connect schools with local food producers.
The $100,000 grant was awarded to the State Health Department in November and will be used to:
• Conduct strategic planning to expand and better support the Indiana Farm to School Network efforts.

Free community 'Learn and Enroll' event to discuss impact of Affordable Care Act

KNOX – MDwise, in partnership with Indiana University Health Starke Hospital, will host a free community “Learn and Enroll” event to discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace on Hoosiers.
The event will take place Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Central time) at IU Health Starke Hospital, 102 E. Culver Rd. in Knox, in the Conference Room. RSVP is not required to attend.

Red Cross urges winter blood donations

NORTH JUDSON — The holidays bring families and friends together to share in celebrations and special times of giving. But for families dealing with a cancer diagnosis or other major illness, the holidays can be difficult.
The American Red Cross’ Give Something that Means Something winter campaign runs through Jan. 6, 2014, and encourages eligible donors to give something meaningful this holiday season by donating blood or platelets for hospital patients in need.   

HealthLinc Hosts Coffee Talks on the Affordable Care Act and Enrollment

The HealthLinc Coffee Talks provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about the Affordable Care Act and how the law affects them and their loved ones. Certified application counselors will be on hand to help people enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace and help them find out if they qualify for subsidies that offset the cost of insurance coverage.
To date, HealthLinc has assisted almost 600 residents with applications or questions about the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace.

MPI employees celebrate Thanksgiving by contributing to the food pantry

KNOX — Giving back to the community may be an overused phrase, but that’s exactly what employees at MPI did for Thanksgiving. Tammy Haines, who is part of Starke County ABATE’s Toys for Kids, mentioned to co-worker Kathryn Galbreath that maybe MPI employees could do something for the community. The two got their heads together and came up with the idea of collecting food items for Thanksgiving.
“We wanted to do something locally,” Galbreath said. “By donating to the local food pantry, we knew it would stay in our community.”

N.J. teen tied for no. 1 rodeo spot in Indiana

Caleb Bope, of North Judson, is a part of the Indiana High School Rodeo team.
On Oct. 27, Caleb traveled to Bowling Green, Ky. to compete in a Tri-State Rodeo (Indiana, Kentucky,and Tennessee). There were also teams represented from Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois.  
In his event, team roping, there were a total of 37 teams he had to compete against. After a great performance, Caleb and his partner placed first for the state of Indiana and second over-all. At this time, Caleb is tied as the top team roper for the state of Indiana

Santa Claus is coming to town

The city of Knox will be hosting its annual tree lighting ceremony Dec. 1 from 5-7 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center: 55 East Lake Street, Knox.
Pictures and visits with Santa,refreshments, choirs and Jazz Band.
Meet at community center tree first, not at courthouse.

A special day for Skyla

September 27, 2013

STARKE — A benefit to help 3-year-old Skyla Clabaugh, whose family lives in Knox and North Judson, will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Gospel Lighthouse Church on Pacific Avenue in Knox.
"Skyla's family will be hosting a dinner/benefit from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse church to help defray the cost of traveling back and forth for chemotherapy treatments and any medical bills," said Skyla's grandmother Missy Trent.
Ten months ago, Skyla was diagnosed with cancer.
