NORTH JUDSON — Robert E Smrt, 91, of Donaldson, formerly of North Judson, died Sept. 15, 2013 at Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson.
He is survived by a brother, Joe Smrt of Knox.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. CDT Friday, Sept. 27 with a 7 p.m. rosary service at O'Donnell Funeral Home, Inc. North Judson.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, North Judson.
Burial will be at Saint Jacobs Cemetery.

Incidents
September 9 – A fight was reported in the 800 block of East Washington Street, Knox.
• Angel Peterson reported her purse missing after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle near Heaton and St. Louis streets, Knox.
September 14 – Debra Scott reported the theft of a tent in the 500 block of South Bower Street, Knox.
September 16 – Joseph Sopcich, of South Bower Street, Knox, reported receiving a suspicious phone call from Jamaica.

Walorski, Attorney General’s office host fraud prevention workshop

August 22, 2013

KNOX — Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) and Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office will host a fraud prevention workshop Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Community Services of Starke County in Knox.
Presentations will be given on the latest scams and how seniors can protect themselves from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft. Participants do not have to register and there is no charge to attend.
The workshop will be held at 1 p.m. at the Community Services of Starke County located at 311 East Culver Road, Knox.

Knox man arrested following two incidents

KNOX — Zachary Puckett, 28, of 1000 W. Culver Road, Knox, was arrested for resisting law enforcement and assault following incidents at Zingo Express and IU Health Starke Hospital. Puckett was observed by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy at Zingo Express using profanity and becoming belligerent. Puckett then went to IU Health Starke Hospital, where he continued being belligerent. A Knox Police officer responded to the hospital, but Puckett had left.

Hamlet Police arrest three suspects in string of burglaries

HAMLET – Three people charged with multiple burglaries were arrested in Starke County by officers from the Hamlet Police Department, following a three-month investigation.
At approximately 11 a.m. on Aug. 12, officers from the Hamlet Police Department executed a search warrant  at 7733 N. Kickapoo, Walkerton. Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the search. Items from multiple burglaries in the Hamlet area were recovered at the scene, along with other items that were believed to be stolen. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia also were seized.

Trial begins next week in Upsall murder case

ROCHESTER — Roy Bell, of Rochester, will be in Fulton Superior Court Aug. 27-28 for a bench trial for his alleged role in the Nov. 22, 2011 shooting death of former Knox resident Wilma Upsall.
Upsall’s body was discovered by her daughter when she returned home to her Leiters Ford residence during the evening of Nov. 22.
Autopsy findings revealed that 81-year-old Upsall died as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted during a burglary allegedly involving Bell, William Scroggs of Delong, and Jason Miller of Plymouth. The latter two have also been charged with murder.

Virginia man dies in Starke County plane crash

July 29, 2013

STARKE — One man is dead following a single-engine plane crash in a homemade experimental aircraft Monday afternoon in Starke County.
James A.W. Evans III, 68, of Stafford, Va. is believed to have died instantly, according to Starke County Coroner Kris Rannell's report. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30.
At 2:50 p.m. the Starke County Sheriff's Department 911 emergency call center received a call about a plane crash. The caller said the crash happened near S.R. 8 along the south end of the Starke County Airport, in Knox.

Starke Health nurse says not first time Starke has tested positive for West Nile

STARKE — Once again, reports of West Nile virus are in the news. Fortunately, Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch says there are no known cases of West Nile in humans in the county.
"I haven't received any reports of anyone diagnosed with West Nile. We did have a case of West Nile in a human in Starke County last year; but so far this year, no one has been afflicted," He said.
Starke County tested positive for West Nile carrying mosquitoes in late spring this year.

Online reserved hunt applications available

Hunters can apply for a reserved hunt online by visiting IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov and clicking on the "Register for a Reserved Hunt" link.
The online method is the only way to apply.
All applicants must possess a valid hunting license for the hunt for which they apply. All applications must be completed by the application deadline to be eligible for the drawing. Hunters will be selected through a random drawing. All drawing results will be posted at Wildlife.IN.gov within a week after application deadlines.
• Dove Hunt Draw: Online application deadline is July 28.

Rubella confirmed at Valpo U

INDIANAPOLIS — A case of rubella (German measles) has been diagnosed in an international student at Valparaiso University in Porter County. State and local health officials are working with the university to identify potential additional cases.
