Wythogan Park may reopen by weekend

Mayor Rick Chambers announced plans to reopen Wythogan Park at last night's council meeting (Tuesday, Sept. 11). Pending final inspection, the park was scheduled to open the weekend of Sept. 15-16, although some cleanup may continue. The City has received an insurance payment of $94,624, and an additional $7,000 will be available for the purchase of equipment damaged during the storm.  

Starke County no. 10 in state for meth labs

STARKE — The Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Unit has published the state wide numbers for Meth Labs dismantled for the state through the end of July. Starke County, located in the Lowell District, has the unwanted distinction of being tied for tenth in the state so far this year for Meth labs discovered and dismantled. There have been 20 Labs dismantled in Starke County through July.

Todd Boldry, former Knox basketball coach arrested for child seduction

KNOX — According to a probable cause affidavit, a Knox Middle School teacher is accused of fathering a child with a former student.
In charging documents through the Starke County Prosecutor's office, Todd Boldy, 39, Knox is accused by a former student who he is alleged to have a sexual relationship with, of also fathering her now 2-year-old son.
Boldry was booked into Starke County Jail Friday and charged with child seduction and official misconduct. Both are D felony charges.

Convicted murderer charged with child molesting

KNOX — Convicted murderer Steven O'Bryant, 43, of Knox, is once again behind bars — this time, he has been charged with four A-Felony counts of child molesting.
O'Bryant served more than 23 years in prison for the April 29, 1987 murder of Anna Lindstrand, then 84, of Knox.

Knox man enters guilty plea in Porter County Court for theft of police car and escape

VALPARAISO — William Blankenship, 23, of Knox, entered a guilty plea on charges of felony escape and auto theft in Porter County Court Monday, Aug. 20 for stealing and crashing a police car Jan. 10, 2012. The charges of fleeing law enforcement and criminal mischief were dropped by prosecutors in exchange for the guilty plea.
Reports state that a maximum prison sentence of six years and restitution for the police car are listed in the plea agreement.

Council approves CEDIT increase for jail construction

August 21, 2012

KNOX — The Starke County Council voted 5-1 to approve the 0.65 percent additional County Economic Development Income Tax (CEDIT) for construction of a new jail. Following Council approval of funding, the Starke County Commissioners approved a request from Skillman Corp. and DLZ to proceed with the design phase of the project.

Wythogan Park still closed

Knox Mayor Rick Chambers would like to remind people that Wythogan Park in Knox is closed.
The park will remain closed until further notice.
Chambers said the area is still unsafe for residents. There are numerous trees still leaning over; and large branches are dangling in the air. These trees and branches could fall at any time and cause serious injury or even death.
Residents who see people in the park are to assume they are work crews or park personnel.

Knox choir raising $ for student outfits

KNOX — Saturday, Aug. 18, the choir students will sponsor a Nelson's Port-a-Pit Chicken and Pit-tatoes Fundraiser. The cooker will be at Smith's Farm Store, on the corner of U.S. 35 and S.R. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until all is sold. The chicken is $6 and the pit-tatoes are $3. Although advance tickets may be purchased from the choir students, tickets are not needed.
Proceeds will go to purchase new performance outfits for the students.

Knox football coach/team praised for park cleanup

KNOX — A representative from the Knox Park Board appeared before members of the school board to commend the actions of the new varsity football coach, Chris McGowen, for sending the football team to Sandy Acres Park to clean up fallen trees and branches. The team spent about four hours at the park doing clean up work instead of practicing.

Flu number rises from 11 to 113

INDIANAPOLIS — Health officials have now confirmed 113 cases of variant influenza A (H3N2v), impacting 18 counties statewide. Confirmed cases were at 11 just a few days ago. State and local health officials continue to investigate the outbreak. More cases are expected to be confirmed this week.
Variant influenza A cases have been confirmed in the following counties: Bartholomew, Greene, Hamilton, Hendricks, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Lawrence, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Porter, Scott, Tipton, Washington, and White. No cases have been reported in Marion County at this time.
