Faith inspires local teen to earn funds for mission trip

KNOX — Jenna Landrum of Knox has an opportunity to participate in a rewarding experience — an opportunity which she is both excited and a little nervous about.
"I will be in Baja (Mexico) for seven days. I'm nervous — because I've never done this before. I'm also excited because I think it'll be a neat thing to experience. I hope I'll learn something about the people and what the living conditions are like down there," Landrum said.

Cops find lost boy; mom, dad arrested

KNOX — The parents of two small children are in the Starke County Jail, charged with neglect, after their five-year-old son was found wandering and crying on Roosevelt Road Friday night.
According to a Knox Police report, a neighbor found the little boy wandering along Roosevelt Road near John Street, crying for his mother. The neighbor called police, and the boy led them to his apartment on Ruthie Drive.
Police found another small child in the apartment watching TV, but the parents were not there.

JW Hicks expanding, adding 20 jobs

KNOX — A $2.5 million expansion of the JW Hicks plant in Knox will add 20 jobs and an estimated $650,000 in additional payroll.
The project was presented to the Knox City Council Tuesday, March 22.
James Hicks, his son Brian Hicks, Josh Deal and Starke County Economic Development Foundation Director Charles Weaver, made the presentation. Hicks is the owner of JW Hicks, Inc.
Project Engineer Josh Deal said a 110,000 square foot addition is planned.

WALKERTON — Lorraine C. Mercer, 86, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 in Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton.
She is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Lowery of Port Orchard, Wash.; sons, James (Pat Best) Mercer of Stillwell, and Robert (Judy) Mercer of Walkerton; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, John Kratzchmar of Calif.; and sister, Carolyn Mallardi of Plymouth.
Visitation took place from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 31 at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel.

Trash bill increase for city residents

KNOX — Inflation will affect the trash bills of Knox residents in August - households in the city will see their bills go up 33 cents starting Aug. 1.
Waste Management is the garbage pickup contractor for Knox. Mayor Rick Chambers said the total cost in 2010 was $206,967.60 and on July 31, the contract for the entire city will go up to $212,076. That's an increase of $5,000 annually.
These rates impact only city residents. This is the final year of a three-year contract with Waste Management. Residents get both garbage pickup and recycling.

School news

Prom Parents – Students are able to purchase single or couple tickets to prom. We expect tickets will go on sale next week.
Tickets for the academic banquet can be purchased through Mrs. Tow in the main office, cost is $7.50
The ACT will be given Saturday, April 9 at Knox High School. Those signed up must be here by 7:45 a.m. with their admission ticket, ID, no. 2 pencils and calculator.
Seniors: Jostens will be back Tuesday, April 12 before school to pass out caps and gowns and graduation announcements.

• Sturdy shoes
• Also include in the kit written instructions on how to turn off your home's utilities
• Conduct periodic tornado drills, so everyone remembers what to do when a tornado is approaching.
• Stay tuned for storm warnings:
• Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updated storm information
• Know what a tornado WATCH and WARNING means

HAMLET — Amy Jo Snyder, 48, of Hamlet, died Tuesday, March 22 at I.U. Health-LaPorte Hospital.  
She is survived by her husband, Rodney Snyder; sons: Joseph and Earl Robertson; father and mother, Robert and Trudie Duncan; sisters: Teresa Casgrove, Julie Loftis and Kellie Stark; and  brothers: Robert, James and Jeff Duncan.  
Visitation was held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rannells Funeral Home.
