Starke County man arrested for spotlighting while in possession of a firearm

STARKE — Indiana Conservation Officer Keith Wildeman arrested Robert Allen, 24, of North Judson on Nov. 4 for spotlighting deer from a motor vehicle while in possession of a loaded firearm.
A concerned citizen placed a call on Sunday evening to the Indiana Turn-In-A-Poacher (TIP) Hotline for a suspicious activity in rural Starke County involving subjects that were possibly poaching deer with firearms and the aid of spotlights.

Walorski stops in Knox to rally with supporters and continue her Main Street jobs tour

KNOX — Jackie Walorski, Republican candidate for Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District, met with area Republicans Wednesday morning at Christo’s to discuss issues and the need to “get out the vote.”
In her opening comments, Walorski said, “We’ve got six days to go. The countdown is on. The name of the game is getting out the vote. We need to get as many volunteers as we can to knock on doors. The critical time is this weekend. All systems are go. Vote early, we don’t know what the weather will be next week."

Treasurer's office now open

Jasper County Judge John D. Potter issued a continuance on the request to have Starke County Commissioners, Starke County Treasurer Linda Belork and their counsel in Jasper Court Monday, Oct. 29 to explain to the judge why they believe they should not be held in contempt of court for closing the Starke County Treasurer's office last Monday until the matter of Belork's lack of bond is rectified.

Health officials confirm 3rd death from fungal meningitis

INDIANAPOLIS—State health officials have now confirmed 41 cases of fungal meningitis in Indiana, including three deaths. The latest death was an Indiana resident, which makes two state residents who have died, and one out of state resident, but who received the contaminated medication injection in Indiana. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), case counts and investigations for each state are based on where the injections occurred, not where the person lived.

Starke County Treasurer's office closed until further notice

STARKE — The Starke County Treasurer’s Office is closed until further notice. Linda Belork was reinstated as Starke County Treasurer Monday morning following Judge John Potter’s ruling issued Oct. 18 that said Belork was entitled to serve in the office she was elected to in November 2008. However, her official bond had been revoked following her removal from office in August 2011

STARKE — Starke County Treasurer Linda Belork, was awarded the right to resume her responsibilities as Starke County Treasurer by Jasper County Circuit Court Judge John D. Potter Thursday, Oct. 18, more than 14 months after being removed from her elected position by Starke County Commissioners.

Bell faces death if convicted in murder of former Knox woman

ROCHESTER — Roy Bell, of Rochester, will be in Fulton Superior Court Tuesday for his alleged role in the Nov. 22 shooting death of Wilma Upsall, 81, a former Knox resident, during a robbery that Bell and two other men, William Scroggs, of Delong, and Jason Miller of Plymouth, allegedly committed.
Bell is looking at a possible death sentence if convicted of shooting Upsall last November at her daughter’s home near Leiter’s Ford.
Upsall’s body was discovered by her daughter when she returned home during the evening of Nov. 22. Autopsy findings revealed Upsall had died from a gunshot wound.

Lt. Gov. Skillman tours JW Hicks

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman visited the J.W. Hicks facilities in Knox Tuesday as part of her Hoosier Crossroads Tour. Skillman, who is nearing the end of her second term as Indiana’s lieutenant governor, has been very active in her support of economic development and the growth of Indiana businesses.
The Hoosier Crossroads Tour, which started in July 2011, will take her to all 92 counties in Indiana visiting local businesses and meeting with local officials. Before coming to Knox, she traveled to Pulaski County to tour Fratco, a plastic drainage pipe manufacturer in Francesville.

Wythogan park reopens

Knox Mayor Rick Chambers announced that Wythogan Park has reopened. The main part of the park is mostly clear of debris and the walking trail is open. However, visitors to the park should use caution as cleanup efforts continue and small piles of debris remain in some areas toward the back of the park. All trunks and large branches have been removed, however telltale signs remain where trees were uprooted along the main entry road to the park.

Wythogan Park may reopen by weekend

Mayor Rick Chambers announced plans to reopen Wythogan Park at last night's council meeting (Tuesday, Sept. 11). Pending final inspection, the park was scheduled to open the weekend of Sept. 15-16, although some cleanup may continue. The City has received an insurance payment of $94,624, and an additional $7,000 will be available for the purchase of equipment damaged during the storm.
