Elusive Knox gunman found lying in yard

KNOX — Police from three counties converged on the east side of Knox Monday night, searching for a man who threatened to kill somebody.
Knox Police Chief Clint Norem said David Griffith, 44, was apprehended and taken to the Starke County Jail. Norem said he is initially being charged with intimidation and criminal recklessness with a weapon.
The initial 911 call to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department said there was an intoxicated man outside a house in the 300 block of East St. Louis Street with a loaded .12-gauge weapon.

Car goes airborne, 1000s lose power

KNOX — Residents in Knox, North Judson, Monterey, Culver, parts of Argos and Plymouth were without power late Monday night for approximately 2-1⁄2 hours following an accident that occurred just after 9 p.m. which severed an electric pole located at the corner of Pearl Street and Culver Road in Knox.

Starke United sets goal, honors the Haughs

KNOX — Starke United has announced it wants to raise $75,000 to help others, and honored Mike and Joan Haugh for helping launch the agency 15 years ago.
“We need your help... let people know that Starke United gives to many agencies,” Board Chairman Todd Zeltwanger told a crowd of more than 80 gathered for the 2010 Campaign Kickoff Breakfast at the Knox Community Center on Thursday, Sept. 2.
The kickoff quickly turned into a tribute to Mike and Joan Haugh, as Master of Ceremonies Ted Hayes detailed the start of Starke United 15 years ago, and explained the roles both Haughs played.

New Tech dawn of a new day at Oregon-Davis

HAMLET — It certainly isn’t your father’s classroom.
Oregon-Davis Schools entered their New Tech initiative at the beginning of the school year and the changes for the corporation go much deeper than just a corresponding facelift to the facilities and new technology. At its face, the initiative has a computer in the hands of every student and emphasizes the use of technology in learning.

IDEM, growers meet over mint stills

CULVER — State environmental officials met with mint farmers last week to discuss permits and dumping of hot water into ditches.
The meeting was sparked by media publicity about the case of a dog which jumped into a small branch of the Robbins Ditch near Koontz Lake on Aug. 12. The dog was almost instantly scalded to death, and owner Pete Daley’s leg was burned when he jumped in to retrieve the dog.

Candidates storm Starke County

KNOX — There were candidates everywhere.
Half a dozen candidates for state office, local candidates, and flocks of their supporters, swarmed throughout the Knox Harvest Festival, especially on Saturday and during the afternoon parade.

Toddler needs new treatment for rare disease

Xavier Boyd has battled illness almost from the moment he was born.
