How does your garden grow

May 27, 2011

Spring is officially here and with warmer weather, locals are planting their flowers, bulbs, and more, to either brighten up the landscape or put fresh foods on the table. We would love to feature you, working or lounging in your garden, but we need your help. Please send in a color photo of yourself, including your first and last name, your town, and tell us a little bit about your garden. We will run photos until the cold weather wilts away all your hard work. Mail them (and a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want it returned) to The Leader, 15 N.

Gas, groceries rise: Tempers too

May 18, 2011

KNOX— Consumers are feeling the burn at the pumps from the increase in fuel — but that's not the only place where shoppers can feel a mightier tug on their purse strings. The local grocery is another area that has been impacted by the soaring price of gasoline.
"That grocery store is charging $6.99 for a jar of Miracle Whip and the mayo. I paid the $6.99 because I needed it. Later, I found the mayo for $2.99 at another local store. I was so mad," Lisa Shepherd of Knox said.

May 17, 2011

Last year, The Leader ran a story on a very brave young man. His name is Xavier James Boyd and he suffers from Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE for short). EE is an allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus. Symptoms are swallowing difficulty, food impaction, and heartburn. The disease was first described in children but occurs in adults as well. The condition is not well understood, but food allergy may play a significant role.
