Commissioners seek appointees for 2011 boards

The Starke County Commissioners are seeking interested, qualified, and community minded individuals for 2011 board appointments as follows:
Starke Regular Drain Board (36-9-27) one Commissioner appointments
Planning Commission (IC 36-7-4) one Commissioners appointments (1D)
Kankakee Iroquois Regional Plan Commission “K.I.R.P.C.” (IC 36-7-7) two Commissioner appointments
Health Board (IC 16-20) two Commissioners appointments (2D)
Aviation Board (IC 8-22) one Commissioner appointment (D)
Hospital Community Board two Commissioner appointments (2D)

Hamlet man dies in U.S. 30 traffic crash

HAMLET — A Hamlet man died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident involving a pickup truck and a farm tractor Tuesday, Nov. 2.
Byron A. Mills, 32, of Hamlet, was traveling westbound on U.S. 30 when the pickup truck he was driving hit the backend of a tractor that was pulling a trailer. The Starke County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene, which was west of the Grovertown truck stop on U.S. 30 and in front of 10660 East U.S. 30.

Drug screens recommended for more county employees

KNOX — Random employee drug screens are becoming increasingly common, and many more of Starke County’s employees may soon be subject to random drug and alcohol screening in accordance with a recommendation from the county’s general liability insurance carrier. This matter was brought forth at the Commissioner’s meeting Nov. 1.
“Our general liability insurance carrier recommended that Commissioners consider random drug and alcohol screening for any employee that drives a county vehicle and/or is in a safety/security position,” said Commis-sioner Kathy Norem.

Mr. Smiley frowned upon by Knox City Council

KNOX — The legality of the sale of K-2, a synthetic equivalent of the controlled substance marijuana, was brought into question at the Knox City Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Jennie Carter, Coalition Coordinator of Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County, presented an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of the drug, also referred to as Mr. Smiley or Spice, in the city of Knox. Carter, along with Sheriff Oscar Cowen, also brought the issue before the Starke County Commissioners at their last meeting.

Election upsets in both Dem and GOP races

KNOX — It was a night filled with many surprises as voters waited for the much anticipated results to come in. Two races which brought a riotous amount of applause from supporters gathered at the Knox Community Center was Nancy Dembowski’s win over Republican candidate Francis Ellert for State Representative District 17 and Sheriff Oscar Cowen’s victory against challengers Gordon Richie (R) and Greg Wireman (I).

K-9 officer helps nab two in drug bust

NORTH JUDSON — Starke County has a new officer and last Monday night, K-9 Fritz was on the job. Officer Fritz had a productive first day when he indicated a car, which was pulled over for a traffic stop, was carrying more than its two passengers.

Twins sentenced

KNOX — Twin brothers Zachary and Ian Bastin, 18, of Grovertown, will each be spending the next 15 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for Burglary.
The twins plead guilty to multiple counts of burglary for homes they robbed in the Koontz Lake area in March of this year .
Zachary Bastin plead guilty to six counts of Burglary, while his brother Ian plead guilty to seven counts of Class B Felony Burglary.

Koontz Lake sewer project ready to go

KOONTZ LAKE — Construction of the Koontz Lake sewer system may begin yet this year, five years after the project was first proposed, according to officials working on the project.
Starke County Commissioners opened construction bids for the project and should decide soon on the winning bid. Construction could begin at any point afterwards.
At the Sept. 21 regular meeting of the Koontz Lake Regional Sewer District, the trustees received and approved the bid evaluations and recommendations from Wightman Petrie.

Knox man arrested following standoff

KNOX — A Knox man apparently distressed about a failed relationship is being held in the Starke County Jail following a standoff with police that lasted almost six hours.
Jason Clark, 33, 1401 Corey Drive, is being held on preliminary charges of intimidation and domestic battery.
At 7:42 p.m. Monday, Sept 27, Knox Chief Clint Norem said Starke County 911 dispatchers received a call from a witness, saying Clark was in his backyard on the far east side of Knox, making threatening statements that he would harm others and himself.

Freddie Baker closes out 26 years as deputy

KNOX — Sgt. Fred Baker - Freddie - has wrapped up a 26-year career in law enforcement, all of those years with the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.
Baker joined the department in September, 1984, first serving as a jailer, then going on road patrol for 19 years. He also served as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Bob Sims.
“It’s bittersweet. I thought I would be down, but I’m really not. It’s time to go. I’m proud to have served this community. I’m going to take a little vacation and move on,” Baker said.
