Belork removed as Starke County Treasurer

KNOX — Starke County Treasurer Linda Belork was removed from office Thursday afternoon, Aug. 11 by a unanimous decision of Starke County Commissioners Dan Bridegroom, Kathy Norem and Jennifer Davis. This decision came during the second emergency meeting of the day, a joint session of commissioners and the Starke County Council.
Bridegroom, who holds the position of commission president, opened the meeting with a summary of events that had taken place earlier in the day.

Road closure

August 11, 2011

KNOX– The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close State Road 8 between State Road 17 and U.S. 35 on Monday, Aug. 15 and Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Crews will perform a chip-seal operation to repair the road surface.
During the closure, traffic will be directed on an 18-mile, marked detour. Westbound traffic will be directed south on S.R. 17, west on State Road 10 and north on U.S. 35. Eastbound traffic will be directed south on U.S. 35, east on S.R. 10 and north on S.R. 17. The work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather.

Commissioners give termination order for Starke Treasurer employees

KNOX — Starke County Commissioners gave the order to terminate all employees in the Starke County Treasurer's office in a public meeting, which was held this morning (Thursday, Aug. 11) and which took place after an emergency executive session of the commissioners.
The termination order was due to an unresolved issue in the 2009 audit by the State Board of Accounts of the Starke County Treasurer's office.
Starke County Commissioner President Dan Bridegroom read a release for members of the media and anyone else in attendance.

Woman jailed for death of 3-year-old stepson

Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff held a press conference Friday afternoon to announce the arrest of Stacie Brown, 34, of 1180 S. 300 E. Knox, for the June 22 death of 3-year-old Ethan Brown, her stepson. Brown is being charged with two Class A Felonies: Battery resulting in death and Neglect of a dependent resulting in death. She is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Homecoming for Andy Howes

KNOX — Chief Warrant Officer George "Andy" Howes enlisted in the Army in September of 1968; he received his wings in August 1969; his first tour of duty was in Vietnam; at 19, he was listed as Missing in Action in Vietnam on Jan. 10, 1970; his unidentified remains were released by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi in 1988; after a break through in DNA testing, he was positively identified in 2010; and on Aug. 1, 2011, after more than 41 years, Andy Howes, escorted by hundreds of Patriot Guard riders, and many officers from various branches of the military, came home.

Closure planned for U.S. 35 bridge demolition

LAPORTE/STARKE COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close U.S. 35 between U.S. 6 and U.S. 30 beginning Tuesday, Aug. 9. Crews will be demolishing the old bridge over the Kankakee River and changing the alignment of the highway to carry traffic over a new bridge.
During the work, traffic will be directed on a 20-mile, marked detour. Northbound traffic will be directed west on U.S. 30, north on Ind. 39 and east on U.S. 6. Southbound traffic will be directed west on U.S. 6, south on Ind. 39 and east on U.S. 30.

U.S. 35 South of Knox to close for chip seal and fog seal

KNOX – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close U.S. 35 between Ind. 8 south of Knox and Ind. 10 south of Bass Lake Tuesday, Aug. 2 and Wednesday, Aug. 3 so crews can perform a chip-seal and fog seal operation to repair the road surface.

Man jailed: Police investigating possible child molestation, rape

July 30, 2011

KNOX - Brett Kersey, 22, of Kewanna, is being held in the Starke County Jail, where he is facing possible charges of child molestation, rape and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The Starke County Sheriff's Department (SCSD) received a call at about 4 p.m. Thursday, July 28 from IU Starke Hospital informing them that a victim of sexual assault had been brought in.
SCSD officers began an investigation into the alleged assault and collected enough information to be granted a search warrant for a residence located at 0440 N. 700 E. in Knox.

KNOX — Forty-one years after being listed as Missing in Action (MIA) in Vietnam, funeral services for CW3 George A "Andy" Howes will be held Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m., with visitation at 5 p.m. at the Knox Community Center, located at 55 E. Lake St., Knox.
