City of Knox not closing MPI

One of the hot topics of discussion in the community the past few days is the closing of MPI. Knox Mayor Rick Chambers heard about the rumor and decided to take steps to ease people’s minds.
“In an effort to dispel rumors that I am going to close MPI, let me say this is completely false. The City of Knox is in the business of expanding industry, not closing it,” Chambers said.

ROCHESTER — Earl W. Beem, 52, of Rochester, died at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 12 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
He is survived by a son, Earl (Anissa) Beem of Knox; three grandchildren; sister, Glenda Bauer of Rochester; brothers: Homer (Anna) Beem and Jay (Theresa) Beem, both of Knox.
Visitation took place from 1 to 5 p.m. (Central Time) Saturday, April 16, at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services took place at 5 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Holloway Motel condemned after meth bust

HAMLET — Six people were arrested and the Holloway Motel on U.S. 30 was shut down Friday night after police found several meth labs, including one in the motel manager's quarters.
The motel was evacuated and condemned after officers, who came to serve a warrant on a suspect, smelled what they recognized as methamphetamine.
Police obtained a search warrant, and officers from the Starke County Sheriff's Department, Hamlet Police and Indiana State Police searched the building.

NORTH JUDSON – North Judson Police and North Judson Wayne Township Fire Department on April 11 responded to a truck that had struck live wires from a utility pole on Talmer Avenue near Ufkes Drive.
The wire was hanging low due to an earlier storm and a branch striking the wire. A semi truck went through the area and pulled the wire down. Starke EMS was on scene as well. No injuries were reported.

Brooke may get 30 years for role in Bass Lake shootout

LEADER STAFF REPORT
The last of those involved in the February, 2010 shootout at Bass Lake, John Brooke, was found guilty of six of the seven charges against him, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, intimidation, possession and manufacturing of a destructive device, resisting law enforcement, unlawful use of body armor and assisting a criminal. He could receive a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Charbonneau: Bill Banning ‘Spice,’ Salvia in State Could Soon Be Law

Senate lawmakers voted 49 to 1 today in support of the final version of a proposal banning  products like ‘Spice’ and the herb salvia divinorum in Indiana, sending the enrolled act to the governor where it could be signed into law.
