Chambers seeking a second term

KNOX — Mayor Rick Chambers announced Tuesday, Jan. 18 that he will seek re-election to another four-year term
One day before official filings, Chambers issued his announcement.
Chambers is a lifelong resident of the Knox area, as is his wife Marlene. They have a daughter, Nikkole, a son Nathan and three grandchildren.

Residents fired up over burn ordinance

Hushed discussion pervaded the meeting room as the public eagerly awaited answers to their many questions regarding an extremely hot topic: The implementation of Starke County’s Burn Ordinance. A topic of serious debate and definite concern, the burn ordinance (and it is an ordinance, not a ban) is under fire by many residents who feel it may lead to unjustified complaints and unnecessary fines.

Bears vs Green Bay

It’s the talk on Facebook, Twitter, between co-workers, friends and even family members. The battle lines have been drawn for what is being hailed as one of the most explosive games in NFL history when, for the first time in 70 years, two North Division rivals square off for their chance to represent the NFC in the battle for the coveted Super Bowl XLV championship title: The Chicago Bears vs the Green Bay Packers; Jay Cutler vs Aaron Rodgers and in Knox, Noelle Patrick vs Joshua Shepherd. Patrick and brother-in-law Shepherd are die-hard fans: Patrick for the Bears and Shepherd for Green Bay.

New year, new gov’t

A new prosecutor, new auditor, new recorder and four new county council members were among those sworn-in during ceremonies last week marking changes in county government.
Judge Marvin McLaughlin swore in Democrats on Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Knox Community Center. New leaders taking office include Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff, Auditor Katherine “Kay” Chaffins and Recorder Lisa Liedtky Minix.

Grants to ease flooding issues in Knox, NJ

KNOX — At the last city council meeting for 2010, Mayor Rick Chambers announced that the city was approved for an $837,095 storm water grant to make improvements on the way the city’s Wastewater Treatment facility deals with storm water. This project is supposed to benefit 195 homes.

Hensler’s delivers state’s Yule tree

HAMLET — A 25-foot tall Concolor Fir tree left Hensler Nursery Thursday, Dec. 9, en route to the rotunda of the State Capitol in Indiana, where it is now displayed as Indiana’s official Christmas tree.

Foundation celebrates 25th

KNOX — Starke County’s movers and shakers showed up Friday, Dec. 10, at the Knox Community Center for the 25th anniversary celebration of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation - the organization most known for attracting new industry to the county and creating jobs.
The event resembled an elaborate trade show, with 14 local industries displaying their products - including such items as truck caps being made for customers in Australia, Holland and Germany, fertilizer stocked in Walmart stores, mint oil used in Scope mouthwash and Ghirardelli chocolates, and much more.
