Halloween safety tips

Halloween may be a fun holiday for children, but for parents the holiday can be a little tricky. To help parents and children have a safe and enjoyable Halloween, the Indiana State Police offers the following safety tips:
The costume - keep costumes short to prevent trips and falls.
Try make-up instead of a mask. Masks often obstruct a child's vision, which makes tasks like crossing the street and going up and down stairs dangerous.
Make sure children wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes.

Community mourns the loss of Knox teen

KNOX — A community is in mourning following the tragic loss of a Knox High School student. Andrew “Drew” Shearin was a 17-year-old junior whose life touched an unbelievable number of hearts before he was prematurely torn away from his family and friends, spurring an astounding amount of sorrow in the community.
Shearin's death is the result of a single-car accident which occurred on S.R. 8 in Starke County Monday night. While the accident is still under investigation, police said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.

Local firefighter fearlessly fights cancer foe

BASS LAKE - As a volunteer firefighter for 26 years for the Bass Lake Fire Department, Phil Banasiak is used to saving people’s lives. Fighting for his own life, on the other hand, is not something he is familiar with. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Banasiak felt fine; he worked all day, went out to dinner, came home, and fell asleep on the couch — but when he woke up Sunday morning, he was stunned to discover he was paralyzed from the waist down.
“It’s a kind of shock. How many people do you know that went to sleep on Saturday and woke up and couldn’t walk on Sunday?” Banasiak said.

Disney named district I superintendent of the year

HAMLET – Dr. Steven C. Disney Jr., superintendent of Oregon-Davis School Corporation, was chosen by members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents as the 2012 District I Superintendent of the Year.
Winners are chosen by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues and their ability to exert instructional leadership using limited resources. One of the seven district winners will represent Indiana in the American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year program.

Commissioners discuss 2010 treasurer audit

KNOX - The results of the audit conducted on the 2010 records for the county treasurer has been returned. The results were discussed at a special meeting Friday evening that was conducted by Starke County Council President Mark Smith, and Starke County Commission Pesident Dan Bridegroom, and Starke County Commissioner Kathy Norem.

KNOX — The 2010 Starke County Treasurer's audit has been released by the state. And according to the report, Starke County Auditor Kay Chaffins has been successful in locating hundreds of thousands of dollars that appeared to be missing due to errors in record keeping.
Because of the condition of the treasurer's records, the state had to rely upon the Starke County auditor's funds ledger, unsettled receipts, receipts in transit and an outstanding checklist.

American Oak Preserving Company Inc. announces another Starke County expansion

NORTH JUDSON — Charlie Vorm, president and CEO of American Oak Preserving Co, Inc., with international headquarters in North Judson and the Starke County Economic Development Foundation (SCEDF) announced the beginning of construction on a new 6,000 square foot structure by American Oak. The new building will be a refrigerated structure that will be used for the short-term storage and sale of Christmas trees and wreaths coming from a supplier in North Carolina from approximately Nov. 15 through Dec. 15.
