Indiana Chamber honors legislators who champion small businesses

INDIANAPOLIS — For their hard work and dedication to improving Indiana's small business climate, four state legislators were awarded the Indiana Chamber's Small Business Champion Award at a recent luncheon ceremony in downtown Indianapolis. The award is based on voting and advocacy during the 2011 legislative session.
The 2011 Small Business Champions are:
‱ Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso), District 5;
‱ Sen. Frank Mrvan, Jr. (D-Hammond), District 1;
‱ Rep. Doug Gutwein (R-Francesville), District 16; and
‱ Rep. Steve Stemler (D-Jeffersonville), District 71.

ROCHESTER — Wilma Upsall Howard, 81, of Rochester, formerly of Knox, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011.
Upsall was born in Tip Top, Ky. Feb. 6, 1930.

Celebration of life held for Upsall

All week, we've heard about the violence surrounding the death of Wilma Upsall, when someone broke into the Leiters Ford home where she was staying this past Tuesday afternoon and ended her life. Tonight, however, violence and crime had no place. Tonight was a night to remember, to share and to celebrate the life of Wilma Upsall who was so many things to so many people: She was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she was also a sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend.

Police nab third suspect in Leiters Ford murder

Police arrested Roy Bell, 24, of Rochester, in the Monterey area Friday afternoon, following a manhunt that began Wednesday evening. Bell was wanted for questioning in connection with the Tuesday, Nov. 22 murder of Wilma Upsall who was staying at her daughter and son-inlaw's home in Leiters Ford, just outside Rochester.
Bell and two other men, Jason Miller, 34, of Plymouth and William Scroggs, 25, of Delong, are believed to have broken into the Leiters Ford residence sometime Tuesday afternoon. Several rooms were ransacked and various items stolen from the home.

Knox Elementary teacher Kyle McCan still employed by Knox Schools

In the Nov. 17 edition of The Leader, Knox Elementary teacher Kyle McCan was listed as having resigned. McCan, who teaches fourth grade at the elementary, did resign his extracurricular position. However, he is still teaching and considered a valued employee in the Knox School Corporation.

Dems select Schmuhl as Democratic party chair

KNOX - The votes from the 2nd District Democratic Precinct Committee are in: Mike Schmuhl, 28, has been chosen as the new Democratic Party Chair for the 2nd District.
Schmuhl’s background includes working on successful campaigns such as Pete Buttigieg’s campaign for South Bend mayor as well as Congressman Joe Donnelly’s 2010 reelection campaign.

Berndt to leave Ancilla nursing

KNOX — After spending eight years as a member of the nursing faculty at Ancilla College, Janeen Berndt is ready to move on — but her coworkers aren’t ready to let her go just yet.
“I’ve been told probably five times that they won’t let me go,” laughed Berndt. “The position director graciously said she felt like she was losing her right arm, and someone else just said ‘So you think you’re moving on?’”

Republicans unseat NJ incumbents

Donna Henry won the North Judson Clerk Treasurer’s race by a slim margin against long-time North Judson Clerk Treasurer Connie Miller. Henry garnered 50.46 percent of the vote, while Miller received 49.54 percent. The final count was a victory by four votes. Henry had 221 votes to Miller’s 217. Henry said she was appreciative of all the support she received from the community.
“I would like to thank all of the North Judson residents who came out to exercise their right to vote. And I especially want to thank all of the voters who supported me,” she said.

KHS presents 'Clumsy Custard Horror Show

The Knox High School Drama Department has done it again: The Clumsy Custard Horror Show, a production that will be put on tonight, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5 in the high school auditorium, is expected to bring forth bouts of laughter from the audience and be an overall success. With a lot of audience participation, the production is described as "your typical fairy tale kingdom with a princess in need of a husband, an evil villain who desires her, and a hero who, of course, saves the day."
