Oregon-Davis first nine weeks honor roll

Police investigating death of Knox man

Knox Police officers were called to a residence on South Main Street, Thursday, Oct. 23 for a man who had stopped breathing.
When officers arrived at the home, they discovered Nicholas Harmon, 23, of Knox, in a bedroom of the residence in cardiac arrest.
Officers initiated CPR until EMS arrived at the location.
Harmon was transported to IU Health Starke Hospital. After receiving treatment at IU Health, Harmon was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died.

New breast cancer map helps identify resources for at risk populations

INDIANAPOLIS — As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Indiana Cancer Consortium (ICC) and the Cancer Control Section (CCS) at the Indiana State Department of Health are encouraging people to get screened for breast cancer. The ICC partnered with the CCS to develop a provider asset map intended to connect providers and resources to the people who need them most.

Mediacom’s all-digital upgrade in countdown phase

First channels become “digital-only” beginning Oct. 29;
Adapters available from local Mediacom offices

KNOX – Mediacom announced today that its North Western Indiana customers will see the first effects of the company’s digital upgrade next week when analog reception is eliminated for a group of popular television channels.
Thousands of digital adapters have been distributed in recent weeks to prepare customers for a phase-out of analog television reception. Those who are not yet “digital ready” can still receive the device needed to ensure reception for channels 22 through 78.

Governor Mike Pence declares Oct. 22 SmileSafe™ Day in Indiana

Gov. Mike Pence has issued a proclamation declaring Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, SmileSafe Day in Indiana. This day of recognition celebrates the partnership between Lifetouch and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in providing SmileSafe photo ID cards to help parents and law enforcement obtain a current school picture if a child goes missing.

State health department opens Ebola call center

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana State Department of Health opened a call center for the public to answer questions regarding Ebola Virus Disease. Health representatives are available to answer questions regarding symptoms, screening and diagnosis of Ebola.
The call center telephone number is 877-826-0011. It is open Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (Eastern). Call 888-561-0044 for the hearing impaired.

Resurface closes S.R. 8 in LaPorte County starting Wednesday

LaPORTE COUNTY – Resurfacing work will close State Road 8 between U.S. 421 and S.R. 39 beginning on or after Wednesday, Oct. 22, depending upon weather. The detour for through traffic follows U.S. 421, S.R. 10 and S.R. 8.
Rieth Riley Construction of LaPorte is patching and resurfacing this section of S.R. 8 as part of a $1.8 million Indiana Department of Transportation contract. Construction should be completed by the end of November.

LAPORTE – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) aims to hire as many as 30 Seasonal winter program workers at a job fair next week. Potential employees should attend the job fair on Friday, Oct.17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (CST), located at the INDOT LaPorte District Office (315 E. Boyd Blvd., La Porte, 46350).

DTFSC partners with CDC for national tobacco education

STARKE Co. — Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County (DTFSC) has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct a national search to identify candidates who are willing to share tobacco-related stories for an upcoming national tobacco education campaign, “Tips from Former Smokers” (Tips).
DTFSC will assist the CDC in identifying individuals who fit the criteria and may be interested in participating in the 2016 Tips campaign.
To qualify, stories will be considered from former smokers who:
