All aboard the easter train

NORTH JUDSON — The Easter Train will be riding the rails once again. This year's train will depart Saturday, April 19 from the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. The easter train journey will be the first excursion for the 2014 season.

O-D holds community meeting on balanced calendar, other changes

Oregon-Davis Superintendent Greg Briles welcomed more than 100 interested citizens, teachers and students to a special community meeting April 3. A variety of topics were presented, including the proposed balanced school calendar as well as other plans at the elementary and junior/senior high schools.
“It’s not a done deal,” said Briles of the balanced calendar. “It wouldn’t take effect until the 2015-2016 school year.” He added that comments received at Knox and North Judson-San Pierre showed a 70 to 80 percent approval rating, “But we will do what the people at O-D want.”

C&C Salvage destroyed by fire

KNOX — Black, billowing clouds of smoke filled the evening sky for miles last Thursday evening as flames engulfed C&C Salvage on U.S. 35 and Toto Road in Knox.
Bass Lake Fire Department was the first of eight departments called to the scene to battle the fiery inferno: Hamlet, Knox, Koontz Lake, Monterey, North Judson, Washington Township and San Pierre also responded.

2014 Primary election activity and deadlines

STARKE Co. — Absentee voting by mail is going on now.  Voters need to contact the election office to get the mail or travel board absentee voting form. Deadline to register to vote is April 7. First day of in-office early voting is Tuesday, April 8, second floor at courthouse, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday through May 5. In-office early voting on May 5 is from 8 a.m. to noon, only.

County tax sale brings in $44,470

March 26, 2014

STARKE — Starke County Treasurer Kasey Clark reported to the Starke County Commission March 3 that 87 properties, 79 percent of the total, were sold during the Feb. 27 tax sale. The sales totaled $44, 470, and included the five properties in Parkview purchased by the city.
The next tax deed sale will be April 8, when 48 properties owned by the county will be sold for 90 percent of their assessed value. Properties not sold at that time will be included in a tax lien sale May 21, when bidding will start at $35 per parcel.
The next regular tax sale will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 5.

N.J. students build bridges

Two North Judson-San Pierre students Brian Eckert (left) and Nick Sierzputowski (right) competed in the 2014 Purdue University Bridge Bust competition. Their Balsa Bridge was third in the aesthetics and 38th in the efficiency out of 94 entries. They each received placement certificates and a trophy for their accomplishments.

Knox, NJ-SP complete presentations on balanced school calendar

STARKE — “A balanced calendar is not the same as a year-round calendar” is the statement repeated throughout the presentations on the balanced school calendar during the recent public meetings at Knox and North Judson-San Pierre schools. It simply more evenly distributes the existing 180-day school year.
NJ-SP Superintendent Lynn Johnson presented information at two public meetings, with a total attendance of approximately 80 students, family members and others from the community.

IU Health offers discounted cardiovascular screenings

LAPORTE, STARKE — Indiana University (IU) Health urges area residents to take action toward prevention through discounted cardiovascular screenings for adults and students in La Porte, Marshall and Starke counties in the coming months.
Upcoming Heart Cart visits include the following Thursdays:
• April 3 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at IU Health Medical Offices at LifeWorks Business Park, 3777 N. Frontage Rd. Michigan City
• April 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Eastern time) at IU Health Primary Care at LifePlex, 2855 Miller Dr., Suite 117, Plymouth

Felty named IU Health president

STARKE Co. – Indiana University Health Starke Hospital named Craig Felty the new president of the organization.
An experienced and dedicated member of the Starke County healthcare community, Felty was previously named Interim Administrator after former Executive Linda Satkoski retired this past December. Prior, Felty served as executive director of patient care services of IU Health Starke Hospital since January 2011.
