Culver’s Hippenhammers serve at home and around the world

September 21, 2014

Linda and Craighton Hippenhammer of Culver are perhaps best well known around the lake as being associated with the well-known, historic home -- "The House of a Thousand Candles" -- that they purchased on the east shore of Lake Maxinkuckee in June, 1992. But they’ve had much more on their minds than the history of one famous house.

Craighton, a professor of library technology at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Linda, a doctor of radiology, are both interested in utilizing their skills, talents and means to serve those in need around the world.

Culver Wine Fair 2014 slated for Saturday

September 18, 2014

What could be better than relaxing on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver and sampling a variety of wine? It's a rhetorical question, of course, and one to which organizers of the third annual Culver Wine Fair believe they have the answer.

Rideon owner discusses space challenges facing local businesses

September 13, 2014

Chris Chambers' search for a new, larger home for his Rideon Bicycles business illustrates what he considers a "huge problem" for Culver -- and he's not alone.

"Unless you have a second job or are independently wealthy, you can't afford to rent a space in Culver, which has hurt the community," he says.

"We're a community that functions four months out of the year. Whitney (Alvis, owner of the new Rideon building) understands that, like Dawn (Minas, who rented the previous Rideon building to Chambers), and wants to see it succeed because it's good for the community."

Marshall County's only bicycle sales and repair shop is about to take on downtown Culver.

Instead, according to Rideon owner Chris Chambers, the bicycle shop will reopen in the lower level of the building, with a courtyard entryway facing Madison Street.

Stage II brings familiar names, faces, and music to Culver and area audiences

September 7, 2014

There's a lot about recently-formed Culver vocal group Stage II that feels like a throwback to a bygone era -- and in a good way.

Not only is the music performed described by member Cliff Berger as something "you don't hear anymore" ("The good music of the 1940s and `50s," he says. "Gershwin, Carmichael, Mercer -- that close harmony."), but the names and faces of Stage II's members hearken back to the days when the area's longest-running theatre and singing group was just getting out of the gate.
