Culver: a year in the life, 2012

January 3, 2013

A look back at the best, worst, and everything in between from 2012 in Culver.

Jan. 5: A winter carnival was planned to accompany the national-level ice fishing tournament on Lake Maxinkuckee scheduled for the Jan. 27 weekend (the date would be moved a few times before the unusually mild winter nixed the event).
Culver bid farewell not only to outgoing clerk treasurer Casey Howard, but retiring deputy clerk Kay Davis, who served 30 continuous years in the position. Edna Mae Craft, long an assistant in the clerk's office, also bid her position farewell.

Culver Christmas traditions through the years

December 24, 2012

Typical Christmas reports in the late 19th century pages of the Citizen focused on visits of residents to family members' homes for Christmas, as well as elaborate Christmas productions or services at one of Culver's churches, most commonly Grace Reformed (today Grace United Church of Christ) or the Methodist Episcopal Church on Main and Washington Streets.

By 1930, Culver had a "community Christmas tree," annually erected on the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets.

Park board talks skating rink in the park, survey results

December 21, 2012

Culver's parks and recreation board lacked enough members in attendance to merit a quorum -- which meant no official votes could be taken -- at its Dec. 5 meeting, but that didn't prevent informative discussion from taking place.

Among topics discussed: the possibility that Culver's park could see an ice skating rink, possibly even yet this winter season.

Culver Wings relocates alongside other new businesses on SR 10

December 11, 2012

Culver residents have likely noticed the large "Culver Pizza" sign on State Road 10 at the former site of the Ten Spot restaurant and bar. They may or may not have realized the new restaurant there is, first of all, not exactly a "new' restaurant at all, and secondly, now open (as of last Wednesday) for business.

Fund-raisers help community support Schrimshers in health battles

December 8, 2012

There's nothing new about Culver family and friends rallying around well-known, lifelong Culverites David and Bobbi Schrimsher, but the community is focusing its support even as the focus of David's health becomes more pointed. Part of that is a bake sale to help the family offset expenses -- organized by longtime friend and classmate Anna Neher -- scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15, starting at 8 a.m. at Park N Shop in Culver.
